Ragged Company
Reflection Journal #1

In many ways, the novel “Ragged Company” by Richard Wagamese relates to the way
George Carlin seemed to perceive the world. The way Carlin displays his opinion on the world and how sincerely messed up todays society has become really shows the kind of person he was.
Just from watching a few of his videos and reading “an Observation” I’ve gathered that not only was he incredibly intelligent, he was a realist. Realism seems to be something Amelia and George have in common because of the way she is portrayed in the book. An example of this would be how Amelia has come to terms with her situation and just learned to accept it and adjust to her living conditions. Based off of the previously stated, I feel as though Amelia would agree with
George Carlin solely because of the way they both view the world. Even though the way things are said and done nowadays are inevitably different than they used to be, and not nessicarily for the better, there are many solutions to these issues. In “an Observation” Carlin gives solutions to these problems within society by saying that we need to just spend more time with our loved ones because they wont be around forever, say kind words to someone who looks up to in awe, because one day they will grow up and no longer be by your side, and simply just stop being so consumed by the world and just cherish the moment because before you know it, life will flash before your eyes and that will be the end of your story. In order to recover from where society stands we as a whole need to make some changes. “We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.”. The solution to all of this is simple and can be summed up in one word; moderation. In Amelia’s case it seems to be a bit harder to survive under the circumstances that todays society is so messed up that many snap

Eyes have guided mankind throughout all history, whether they allowed us to foresee danger or helped us find our loved ones. They have granted us sight over what would otherwise be invisible to us. When looking at someone, one can tell how they are feeling by staring into his or her eyes. Our eyes never lie. Our eyes will often mirror our souls and display our true inner emotions. In Elie Wiesel’s autobiographical narrative, Night, he uses the eye motif to portray characters’ true souls.…

When individuals become older some experiences health conditions, and depends on caregivers to take care of his or her needs as well to include feeding, bathing, dressing, and transporting. Further, when becoming older some individuals disengage themselves from society. “Disengagement theory saw decreases interaction as the outcome of mutual withdrawal of society and the older person,” (Novak, 2009, p.…

People in 2014 are finding themselves running out of time. The use of social media is getting out of hand. There are more creative ways to express something or someone, including dancing and nature. People think too much and begin to multitask which is not good for our brains. So much is forgotten with so little time. Many people are wasting time trying to figure out what they want to do and becoming stressed out. The same things are happening everywhere throughout history. Attention spans are short with the frequently used technology. People do not think there is enough time in a day to finish what they started.…

Although, humans undergo changes in mindset the overall judgment does change, one of this examples would be the social norms that are often placed on people. As time lapses and people are often said to be modernized it may not always be the case. The biggest example of this would be the social norms of the woman's role. Women have always been considered the primary person to be at home. The person that should make sure that the home is clean and that the children are…

    Emerging Adults

(2012), “Not only is emerging adulthood (usually defined as the period from 18-26) an important developmental period characterized by peak prevalence of substance of substance use problems and problems related to use, it also sets the stage for later adult development.” (pg.749). Behaviors pertaining to alcohol consumption and illicit drug use are all central to a young adult’s search of identity and new and profound independence. Emerging adults are faced with a number of stressors in their lives. They are expected to have their lives mapped out in terms of planning for further education, acquiring financial independence, and maintaining healthy and happy lifestyles, (Arnett, 2005). These daily stressors are possible indicators of why emerging adults binge drink. Though binge drinking is a risk that can affect all emerging adults it was found in research conducted by Stone et al. (2012) that over consumption in alcohol is higher among male emerging adults. Coate and Grossman (1998) found that “strong drink and driving policies predicted lower male drinking and binging, not female binging”. It was also found that “Beer prices did not predict male drinking, but predicted less female under-age drink and binge.” (Stone et al., 2012). This explains how taxation and regulation are solutions that can reduce binge drinking, and behaviors such as intoxicated driving, domestic abuse and violence, and injuries. Though regulations’ and taxation are solutions that can reduce such behaviors and short term and long term effects there needs to be more of an awareness and advocacy of safe drinking in the state of…

Dargis has many opinions about the film Amelia. Dargis has a lot of to say about the potential and development of the film. I disagree with Dargis opinion about the film. He believes the film was dull and melodramatic. I thought the film was amazing, inspiring and courageous. Mira Nira did an excellent job on directing Amelia, the structure of the film was good. It wasn’t your typically 3 hour film that drags with extraneous details in the movie. Nira put the right among of facts about Amelia in the film, that didn’t make it a tedious documentary or cliché Hollywood movies. Nira could have left the audience with a sense of idea about her last flight. It could have been a dramatic ending. For example Earhart planes dives into the ocean, the…
