Railroad During The Industrial Revolution
Railroads have been around for almost two hundred years. During the Industrial Revolution, Railroads were one of the important factors. Railroads brought out only benefits to America, they brought political, economic and social change in only 50 years since they were brought to America. Trains and railroads were also an important factor during the civil war. Trains helped by carrying military supplies from one military camp to another. Over the next 50 years, America would come to build spectacular bridges and other things that would allow trains to run on. They would also come to see great depots, rail magnates, and the majesty of rail locomotives crossing the country. Railroads would also change the way you transport and the traveling time.
And another positive effect was one were able to ship and receive imports and exports a lot faster using the railroad systems. With trains and railroads it helped populate more western areas quicker, especially in California. Trains and railroads also had negative effects. While the railroads were being built most of the employees were mostly Irish and Chinese. The working conditions were awful and were very dangerous. The men working on the railroads risked their lives every day. 12 hours of work comes up to only 10 miles of track. Even though the work paid off the workers were also victims of racial discrimination. If a worker was foreign they did not receive full citizenship, and also they still had to pay taxes. Many men have died from working on railroads due to its geography around it and also the men had to look for Indians around them. And another negative would be the Indians, the further the railroads were built the further Indians had to move to other areas. With trains being built more pollution have spread in the air more than ever before. The speed of early trains was very slow compared to the trains here in the present. The average speed of a freight train at the time of WWI was about 12 miles per hour. The average speed of a passenger train was just short of 20 mph. Today Trains can reach up to and even go faster than the speed of 100 mph. If one wanted to go to coast to coast it would possibly take over a week in the past, but now in the present it could take possibly one day or less. the travel time of trains have changed significantly over the past two hundred years.
