In the article “The Danish Girl Reflects On Love’s Power To Transform” by Eliza Berman talks about the true stories of transgender women and how do their stories end up on the big screens, but often are criticized by various people from different backgrounds. In the movies that tells transgender women stories how they decided to change, actors prepare for their roles by interviewing transgender women and their partners if they have one. Transgender stories are more and more frequent and becoming more popular as people starting to accept such thing as the gender change.…
Along with discussing “situated doing”, Zimmerman and West also discuss different terms that are used to describe gender. The terms that are discussed in the article are sex, sex category and gender. Sex is used to gender through one’s biological…
When infants are born, the first words uttered from the doctor is the sex of the child. As soon as the sex is announced, the baby is already perceived a certain way. By categorizing human beings into two different genders, male or female, you are limiting these people by gender roles and societal expectations. When doing this it causes harm to anyone who strays from their gender or sex assigned at birth. A term to describe these people is transgender. A transgender person is someone whose identity is not the same as their gender assigned at birth. Many other identifying people fall under this category. It is time to deconstruct society's views on gender and provide necessary rights to transgender individuals. Transgender people not being accepted into society is a significant problem in contemporary culture that challenges the traditional norms of the gender binary.…
Gender identity literature offers many variations on the same theme when defining the term “Gender Identity”. Hird argues that "‘sex’ referred to biological differences between women and men, whereas ‘gender’ signified the practices of femininity or masculinity in social relations" (Hird, 2000, p. 348). Due to the nature of gender identity and the…
A masculine woman in a female prison adopts a social role as well as a sexual role as what is termed the “aggressor”. Since the identity of transgender differs across prisons themselves, the authors state that research done on the treatment of transgender individuals in prison can only be conducted when this is understood. The authors argue that not recognizing the different status of the transgender population in women’s prisons will render them invisible instead of the assistance we think we are providing by labeling them transgender. The methods used were qualitative, utilizing focus groups of prisoners to question them about social concepts. This method is used properly for the hypothesis the researchers sought to prove, yet encounters translation issues. The basis of the author’s argument if that transgender people in women’s prisons are seen as aggressors, a separate social standing. However, we only see this through their transcriptions of interviews, as the participants never explicitly state it. This exposes a level of bias in the researchers although the structures of the focus groups were thoughtful and controlled. As this article was written in 2015, the data retrieved is current and relevant to the issues being researched. As we continue to study the treatment of transgender peoples, it is important to recognize these author’s findings that the term we use is different depending on the environment and would thusly affect the research. This study exposes the novel idea that being transgender in a women’s prison can actually be beneficial in many ways, opposite of the treatment seen in men’s prison. This new outlook is vital in analyzing the representation of transgender people in media as well as properly observing and finding…
My life is pre-determined by my race and gender. I have felt the pressure to conform to society’s image of a white wealthy male. Being male has given me benefits that many transsexuals have noticed and worked to become accustomed to. In Deborah Rudacille’s piece “Introduction”, Rudacille noted that one person “simply cannot understand why a successful middle-aged man would surrender his cultural power to assume the lower-caste status of a middle-aged woman” (Rudacille XIX). Growing up male already gives me a title and path to what I must become. Early on I was lead to believe I must become the main provider and source of security in my family, and the amount of free will I possess allows me to choose this path for myself.…
“The term transgender is often used as an all-purpose descriptor for a wide range of nonconventional gender identities that include individual’s identified as transsexual, female-to male trans men, male-to-female trans women, gender queer,…
“The concept of gender is used by sociologists to describe all the socially given attributes, roles, activities and responsibilities connected to being male or female in a given society. Our gender identity determines how we are perceived and how we are expected to think and act as women and men, because of the way society is organised” (March et al, 1999)…
Everybody in today’s society experiences gender throughout his or her life. However, as a female, I have personally always been affected by the social construction of gender in my day-to-day life, whether I was aware of it or not. Gender is such a prominent aspect of life for everyone that we barely recognize the effect it has on us, especially when it’s constructed within our own families.…

One of the participants of the “Experienced of Career-related discrimination for Female-to-male Transgender Person: a Qualitative study” had experienced “Horizontal oppression's” which is being discriminated against by member of the LGB community because of their gender. One participant, who was a cosmetologist, revealed, “ I was interviewing to be a front desk person at a salon and the interviewing manager there loved me. It happened to me that the salon was owned by two gay men, and when they found out that i was being considered for the job, they freaked out. I didn’t get the job. They were worried that i was going to be an issue with the clients because of my gender” (Dispenza 73). This shows just how much of discrimination. Discrimination pervasive and permeates various aspects of a transgender person's…
An individual maintains the oppression of transgender people by possessing negative attitudes and behaviors that are conscious or unconscious toward transgender people (Hardiman, Jackson, & Griffin, 2013). With cisgender privilege, a person can live their lives without their gender identity ever being called into question (Taylor, 2013). However, this is not the case for transgender people (2013). Transgender people gender identities are often assumed by individuals regularly, which is disrespectful to the transgender community (Seelman, 2014). For example, Lie (2013) has experienced other people questioning her gender identity during daily experiences (Taylor, 2013). While Lie (2013) is dressed en femme, she is addressed as “pal” by a sales…
In Thailand, the growth of a transgendered female population has led the Thai culture to classify a third gender role, commonly termed ladyboys. The Thai language also uses the terms “kathoey” or “sao praphet song” (meaning ‘second kind of woman’) to categorize this gender role (Winter 2008, 47). A transgendered female is a born male who undergoes a male-to-female identity change. There is much discussion as to why a kathoey thinks of herself as a female even though she is in a male’s body. Though personal relationships and individual events can supply an environment which an individual can flourish and become a successful kathoey, the conclusion based on first hand data presented in the journal article Thai Transgenders in Focus:Their Beliefs About Attitudes Towardsand Origins of Transgender is there a biological reason over personal relationships or other circumstances(Winter 2008, 58).…
