The theme I choose is, “Don’t judge a man until you’ve walked two moons in his mocassains”. The theme is statting not to judge a man beffore you have been through what he has. One example of this theme is when Pheobe thinks Mike was a lunatic and kiddnapped her mother. The theme …show more content…
is biblical because in Matthew 7:1-6 the Bible says not to judge others unless you want to be judged. I also think not judging others so you won’t be judged falls in line with the golden rule and how it says do to others what you want them to do to you. There was conflict between Mary Lou and Alex because Mr.
Birkway their teacher read the journal that Mary Lou had written and in the journal it said, “ I think Alex is pig-headed. His skin is always pink and his hair is always clean and shiny … but he is really a jerk” (Creech 190). Even though there teacher changed the name while reading it aloud Alex still knew it was him who she wrote about. The book didn’t say if they solved the conflict, but Mary Lou did try to explain to Alex that she wrote it before something but she never finished the sentence. While observing the conflict I didn’t learn many things about a character but I learned some characteristics like how his skin is pink, his hair is clean and shiny, and can be pig-headed. I would have taken Mary Lou’s side because she did try to talk to Alex and maybe if he stayed around to listen they could have worked things out could have been solved. I also agree with her because I do know what it's like to have a certain perspective of a person and then have it
changed.
“In the envelope was a note from Gramps giving the name of the hotel he was staying at”. He also had written in the note,“I am sorry to say that our Gooseberry died at three o'clock this morning.” (Creech 258). I found this quote profound because while her and her grandparents were taking a trip to see her mother’s grave, her grandmother was hospitalized and dead . Sal was so focused on seeing her mother’s grave that she didn’t think her grandmother would die or that she had to be there in her final moments.
The first word I found that challenged me was Caboodle. Caboodle means the whole number or quantity of people or things in question. The word caboodle was used in the sentence, “ I have lived most of my thirteen years in Bybanks, Kentucky which is not much more than a caboodle of houses roosting in a green spot alongside the Ohio River” (Creech 1). If you wanted to use the word in a sentence you could say; there was a caboodle of people looking at the house for sale. Tottery means unsteady in gait as from infirmity or old age. The word was used in the sentence, “It might sound a bit extreme for a man to call the police on his own tottery old parents, but when my grandparents got in a car trouble just naturally followed them like a filly trailing behind a mare” (Creech 5). You could use the word in a sentence by saying’ the tottery old lady needed help crossing the street. The next word is ornery. Ornery means bad-tempered and combative or stubborn. Ornery was first used in the sentence, “ Sometimes I am as ornery and stubborn as an old donkey” (Creech 6), but it was used more throughout the book. If you used ornery in a sentence you could say, my sister is acting really ornery whenever my parents ask her to do something. Another word is divulge which means make known (private or sensitive information. The word divulge was used in the sentence, “ I expanded that just as Phoebe was going to divulge the purely awful thing that had happened to Mrs. Cadaver her father came home from work and we all sat down to dinner: me, Phoebe, Mr. and Mrs. Winterbottom, and Phoebe's sister Prudence” (Creech 26). If you were to use the word in a sentence you can say, I had been nervous all day because my teacher was going to divulge the that I had cheated on a test. The last word was pandemonium. Pandemonium means wild and noisy disorder or confusion; uproar. Pandemonium was used in the sentence, “It was complete pandemonium at the Finney’s” (Creech 43). If you wanted to use the word in a sentence you could say, There was extreme pandemonium while hosting the birthday party. I liked the book and I think it taught important lessons. I would recommend it because of the lessons it taught like not jumping to conclusions like Phoebe. The book also taught when some people leave they might not come back but that doesn’t mean they won’t. I think the ending was satisfying and it shouldn’t be changed. I don’t think the ending should be changed because Phoebe's mom came back which was good for her and Sal ended back at the farm where her mother’s spirit still lingers which is also good for her.
