I found evidences that can back up my thesis what I found in a phrase in Flying Home, “When you must have them judge you knowing that they never accept your mistakes as your own but hold it against your whole race that is humiliation”. Todd think about humiliation, so much is because he doesn’t want to have more burden than he can bare. Todd wants to seek a new identity without bring shame to him our society. He wants to be able to show the white society that he can fly with excellent skills, and show that his own race can have the same ability to fly. During the time that Todd was flying he had a plane crashed. Todd had crashed because he had flown too high and fats that the plane had smashed into a buzzard into his plane windshield it caused Todd to lose control. When he crashes that plane, Todd has already felt his white officer will confirm that blacks are not skilled enough to fly or be an aerial combat. He feels like his own race might bring him down if he doesn’t show the white society that his people are skilled in flying and aerial combat.
