Randolph Ammons Poems
“You have your identity when you find out, not what you can keep your mind on, but what you cannot keep your mind off.” This seems like a quote everyone can relate to. We spend most of our trying to figure out who we are, when all we have to do is look inside and see what we truly cannot go one day without thinking about. This is my favorite quote from an author I have come to really enjoy this while studying this semester Archie Randolph Ammons. Ammons was an American born poet who specialized in satire poetry. In this research paper I will research Ammon’s life leading up to poetry and what helped him decide he wanted to be a poet.
I also plan to talk about Ammons writing style. I want to talk about why he got into doing more satire like poems. Along with this I want to talk about his poem “Their Sex Life”. This poem is only a few short words

Ammons’ life and career” on the website http://www.english.illinois.edu. With this source I will be able to talk about Ammon’s life growing up leading to his career as a poet. This source talks about Ammon’s childhood, family, how he proudly served his country during World War II, and how he went on to go to college after. I will also be using www.parisreview.org. This source is an interview between David Lehman and Mr. Ammons. It talks about why Ammons become a poet and his inspirations to come up with his poems. On the website www.poets.org I have learned about all the awards Ammons won as an author over the years. There are lots of them listed this just goes to show how widely known Ammons was. I am really enjoying this assignment. After doing some research on the poem “Cowards” for our last essay I realized how much I like Ammons. This Research paper is giving me the chance to dive deeper into finding out who Ammons was as a person. I am excited for the finished product I feel I have come a long ways writing since the beginning of the

Your final project for this course will be a research paper of 1500 words with a minimum of four sources. We’ll have a library orientation session on October 28 that will assist you in learning how to do academic research on a literary topic. You will choose any text (or two texts), either poetry or short fiction, that we have read over the course of the semester for your topic. I recommend you take one of three approaches that I will be going over with you in class: formalist (focusing on the text’s structure and literary devices), theoretical (reading the text for issues of gender, race, class, psychology, etc.), or contextual (focusing on the text’s historical, cultural, and social context).…

    Derek Walcott's 'XIV'

How do people know what they are meant to do for the rest of their lives? For some, their inspiration may be more discreet; they might not be aware of what they want to be, yet. For others, their inspiration may be the things that push them to dream and create. Derek Walcott, in the poem “XIV” from Midsummer, illustrates the feeling of being inspired to do something for the rest of his life. He describes his experience when he first meeting an elderly storyteller, and how it had impacted his life. That experience had led him to want to be a writer and a storyteller, just like the elderly woman. To demonstrate the impact of that experience he used literary devices such as an analogies, personification, and anaphoras.…

The main idea that one should get out of this essay is that the battle of Antietam is so sad, and should be a very memorable event for everyone. Also the battle is very important because it was thee first battle to be fought on Northern soil. Which was a very big deal for the Union. To summarize the three main points of my essay were that in the beginning of my first impression of the photo was more sad and demoralizing, but after the research I found out that not was it only sad and demoralizing, but it’s leaders of both sides had lots of strategic ideas, and were both very brave. So with all of the information provided hopefully the reader is now filled with this knowledge about this very historic battle that was a very big moment for the Union, and hopefully after reading this one might want to read and research more about this battle, also looking at the picture and will give the readers his or her own…

William Shakespeare once said, "To thine own self be true, and it must follow as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." Dating back to Elizabethan Literature, self-identity has always been deemed as essential. Fast forward to modern times, the authors of more contemporary works have taken the same concept of identity but have revealed the way actions taken can influence an individual's understanding of themselves. For example, in John Howard Griffin's memoir, Black Like Me and Wes Moore's memoir, The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates were both authors encounter lifestyles of similar individuals. Through both comparable lifestyles, Griffin and Moore display the way work can affect the personal and social identities of…

During the 1920’s, the country was still segregated, and black people were denied the right to vote, attend schools where they would be intermixing with white people, and often lived without the same standard of living embraced by white people. They often did not have electricity, their clothes were in poor condition and books were often discarded books from the white schools. Black males were automatically suspects in crimes, and often did not have a fair trial.…

Everyone has a story, as some choose to keep their lives private, others choose to put theirs on paper for hundreds to read. A popular form of self-expression, as well as telling ones story is poetry. With more than enough authors publishing their poetry, one has to really stand out to become an award-winning poet. Kathleen Sheeder Bonanno and Frank X. Walker are both poets who hold multiple awards for their literature. Although they both may be recognized for their immaculate and symbolic writing skills, these two are far from identical writers. Kathleen Sheeder Bonanno and Frank X. Walker might share the same award, but their way of writing proves correct that they are two completely different people with two very different stories.…

    Minerva Jones Poem

In the epitaph "Minerva Jones" by Edgar Lee Masters I learned that she was looked at as a person with a "heavy body, cock-eye, and rolling walk" and that she was the village poetess. The people this poetess speaks about are as she refers to as "Yahoos of the street" these were the people who would hoot and jeer at her as she walked by because of her looks. She also says that someone named Butch Weldy captured her after a brutal hunt and that she "sank into death, growing numb from the feet up" she is now pregnant by Butch. This lets us know how the poet's view on small-town America because not only does that seem bad that in the epitaph the girl is "captured" she is thirsty for love and hungry for life which means she isn't loved nor does she…
