Ethics is the study of practical reasoning, Nurses face ethical dilemmas on a daily basis which could impact both the nurse and the patient’s lives, when it comes to ethical dilemmas there is no 'right' solution. The nurse knows that if the patient continues to not eat or drink he will cause serious harm to himself. As long as the patient has full capacity and understands what he is doing and is happy with the consequences of their actions the nurse has no right to force the patient to eat or drink against their will and will have to accept and support the patient’s wishes. If the patient is showing signs of not having capacity the nurse may seek help from other services such as the mental health team and social services, the mental health team would access the patient and if they feel the patient does not have the capacity to make decisions that would not cause harm to themselves then the mental health team would step in and enforce procedures if they feel it is in the best interests of the patient, and social services would be involved to ensure that if the patient was to be discharged back in to the community the patient will have everything set up for them to make sure they recover well. If the nurse was to go against the patient’s wishes and force the them to eat and drink and cause the patient distress, and if the mental health team did not do an accurate assessment of the patient and came to the wrong conclusion about the mental capacity of the patient and again cause distress and harm to the patient would both be classed and bad
