The death of Alexander the Great inspired the beginning of the Hellenistic era of the fourth century. The characteristics of this period marked a separation and divide from earlier Greek’s works. One area where Renaissance artists expressed their interest in human nature was in paintings. First compare the picture of the Madonna with the Renaissance painting of the Mona Lisa. Leonardo da Vinci showed a woman as she really looked. He used shading, natural folds in clothing and human expression to paint a person. This is very different from Buoninsegna’s painting. He painted a statue. The face has few features, and is 2 dimensional. The child looks like a little man, and he uses religious symbols to portray emotion. From my perspective, but limited familiarity with works of art in general, the Raphael painting is significant in that it is considered a prime example of High Renaissance art and considered Raphael’s masterpiece. I believe it is also significant because as a component of the School of Athens (1509-1511) the painting over a period of 500 years continues to influence discussion and analysis among art historians and scholars.…

This paper will attempt to give a descriptive analysis and comparison of two medieval sculptures viewed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The first sculpture entitled, “Virgin and Child;” attributed to Claus de Werve, a Netherlandish sculptor by Pierre Quarre a curator and chief of Musees de Djon and a leading authority on Burgundian sculpture. Claus de Werve was commissioned by the Duke and Duchess of the town of Poligny to create this statue for the convent which was headed by a Francisean nun named Colette between 1415-1417. The statue which is made of painted limestone is believed to be a gift that was commissioned for the convent. The second sculpture is entitled, “Mother and Child; Mali” which was created in Mali by the Bomana peoples.…
A fresco is done on plaster, on walls or ceilings; somewhat like a mural painting. The original name of this fresco is actually Causarum Cognitio (Knowledge of Causes) but it‘s called School of Athens, which came from a 17th century guidebook. The School of Athens was painted by Raphael Sanzio (or Raffaelo Santi), who was 27 years old at the time, for Pope Julius II between 1510 and 1511. The pope was so enthusiastic when he saw the fresco that Raphael received the go-ahead to paint the entire papal suite. The Stanza della Segnatura was to be Julius' library, which would have a small collection of books intended for his personal use stored in it. The fresco of Raphael's School of Athens is a masterpiece of art. However, we do not know all the identities of the persons who are depicted. Giorgio Vasari and others have suggested that nearly all Greek philosophers and ancient scientists can be found in the painting. During this time pieces of artworks were being produced at a strong rate. This was due that artists were gaining recognition over large areas. This new fondness of artwork that contained humanistic influences were new, and people were amazed by the style that had not been seen before in their lifetime. A large proportion of the artwork that was being made was made for the church and popes. One such artwork was the school of Athens, created by Raphael Sanzio, for the Apostolic Palace, in Vatican City. This work is of a grand scale in that was commonly taken on by the artists of the time. This particular fresco is 16’’5’ by 23’’ 3’ and is one of Raphael’s more famous works. Just by looking at this fresco you can see the strong influence of humanism. The theme itself is a strong give away, for it has a landscape full of philosophers from ancient times. As the lines of the fresco draw your eye the center of the landscape, you see two of the giants of ancient Greek philosophy Aristotle and Plato. One of the reasons that your eye is drawn toward the center of the painting is because Raphael was able to use the concept of using a vanishing point to make this 2d painting 3d. Throughout Egypt, during the middle empire art evolved as a symbol for power and permanence featuring straight lines and powerful figures; as time passed art evolved again morphing from simply representational images of man to the more idealized and anatomically correct style of Roman art. As art became more and more prevalent through the late 3rd and early 4th century’s artists began to focus more on anatomical perfection and realism borrowing artistic elements from other cultures such as the Greeks. Though the artistic styles of ancient Egypt and early Roman art vary widely, the underlying symbolism remains the same. This is clear in both the Egyptian Sculpture Vizier (Figure 1) and the Roman sculpture Bust of and Unknown Man (Figure 2). Around the times that Athens defeated the Persian Empire and was declared as the strongest Greek city, Classical art was at its peak (480-323 BC). Out of all the Greek cities, Athens was the city that was advanced in politics, economics, and culture. During the period of time that the Athenians were dominating Greece, the classical art style emerged. The philosophical context of classical art is that the Greeks wanted to make sculptures of the perfect bodies so they studied bodies until they did it. The Greeks were able to learn how the body is shaped and then transfer it over onto a medium, where tons of practice resulted in classical art (perfect proportions). There was a time when one out of a human marriage’s used to end in a divorce. “ A divorce is like and ampulation: you survive it, but there’s less of you” by Margaret Atwood. It is a legal action between married people to terminate their marriage relationship. It can also be defined as the dissolution of marriage. In my opinion, for almost all people it is very hard to deal with this kind of situation. No one enters a marriage life believing that some day it will end up in divorce but due to their habits, feelings, misunderstandings most of the marriages are ending up. The divorce rates have increased since the Divorce laws has been introduced in 1968, 20% of all divorces in Canada are a repeat divorce for atleast one of the spouses. With that, the divorce rate for first marriages is lower than the divorce rate for all other marriages. There were 27,577 divorces in Ontario in 2001 and the statistics showed that the number of marriages are declining and the number of the families living in common- relationships are increasing, although these relationships also lead to marriage but are short lived.…
The ancient Greeks are known as a self aware people. No other culture in western civilization history was quite as introspective as the Greeks. They prided themselves as the most civilized society in the world. In fact the term “barbarian” basically meant non Greek. The development of Greek civilization rises from the ashes of the ancient Mycenaean and Minion cultures. From After the decline and eventual fall of the Mycenaean culture in 1100 BCE, the Aegean Islands would experience a “dark age” period for about 200 – 300 years. By 800 BCE Greece would begin to show growth and stability in their government, economy and culture. This period is referred to as the Homeric Age. The writer Homer would write the stories of prehistoric Greek history (If you have not had to read The Iliad or The Odyssey in your academic career thus far, just wait, it is coming.) The Italian Renaissance was a reawakening of literature and art, as well as many of the ideas of previous cultures (“The Impact,” 2016). Although they were not the only ideas to be revived, Greco-Roman Classical beliefs were perhaps the most prominent.
