The costumes are of a medieval style, we know this from the design of the dress as they have square necks and tight fitting wrist length sleeves much like the dresses that were worn in that time period. The dresses reach ankle length on each of the dances and have a fitted torso with a dropped v-waist which then falls into a slightly gathered, loose material lower half which flows down from the waist to the ankle. In this piece I believe it is important for the dresses to be fitted on the arms and torso area as these are the main areas of which are used in the contact work such as lifts- and it then makes it easier to perform these moves as dancers can get a better grip on each other. There are also many intricate arm and hand movements where dancers have to intertwine with each other- therefore the tight fitting arms ensure that the moves can be performed with clarity and precision.…
This is a very elegant looking gown. It consists of mainly different shades of purples. The bodice of the gown consists of a layer of tightly attached silk, covered in jewels and rhinestones. The top of the bodice has a bow shaped pattern attached. This draws your eyes to the top of the bodice. By having the bow on the top of the bodice the same material as the bottom of the gown, it shows how the designer has reused used materials in an effective way. The bottom of the gown is made of a purple shade of silk. Alex Perry has designed the bottom of this dress so that the layers are given with a multiple layering effect; make the gown look ‘fuller’. This photo has been taken with the layers…

In the 1840’s the dress style stayed the same. The skirt was bell shaped. The dress had many pleats and other details that signaled the narrow waist of the dress. The waist came and formed at a point at the end of the bodice. There was not much patterns in the dresses of this time. The sleeves of this time were also long during the day, as well as the necklines being…

Moving onto the element of interest; the sunray effect seam detail. This gives a ‘shapely look’, suggesting that Reiss like to - not only create formal looks - but also very feminine rather than androgynous.…
Robert Kilker concludes that though Black Robe “may at times pretend to equalize its perspectives of the French and Algonquins . . . it always recovers that balance, replacing it with a Eurocentric hierarchy.” I felt just the opposite. For me, Black Robe was based around Chomina, a true hero. Chomina is a strong character who stands firm in his beliefs but respects the beliefs of others, which is why he is the essence of the movie. As the movie progresses, the characters change, especially Laforgue, who comes to question his very identity as a Christian. Chomina changes the least, however, and emerges as the film’s most powerful character. His key trait is his ability to establish relationships that are founded on respect. Chomina accepts outsiders, while staying true to his own culture. He demonstrates how two cultures can co-exist, but not assimilate into one culture or the other. The basis for this co-existence is respect – a respect that begins in respect for himself and spreads to respect for his tribe and respect for other cultures.…
“Annuka told me they believe that in the forest at night the dead can see. The souls of men hunt the souls of animals,” said Daniel in the 1991 film, Black Robe. Based in the 17th century, Black Robe follows a French Jesuit priest (Father LaForgue) and a fellow companion through Quebec’s wilderness during the peak of the harsh winter months. Their escorts, the Algonquin native tribe, make attempts to lead them to a Christian mission in a Huron village too which Father LaForgue will become head priest and manage the settlement. Along the way, however, the young Priest hurtles multiple obstacles in both his faith, and with the native people. The struggle between what the natives already believe, and what the French, specifically Father LaForgue, are trying to make them understand is the cause to most the conflict, betrayal, and inevitable death in the film.…

Her dress includes a magenta velvet petticoat and an outer dress made of gold damask. If it was a cold day, she might also drape a fur coat around her arms. The fur coat would have been made of rabbit fur. Her dress also includes a French cut neckline, but Lady Montague would have the option to wear…
In the recent years, we have seen a spreading of the princess culture to other things in our society. Have you ever gone to a Disney theme park and seen all of the little girls that want to have the dress, the slippers, and the hair all done? The article written by Krista Jahnke an author at the Wichita Eagle newspaper, expresses concern about princess culture in depth and makes the point that the princess craze is becoming very major. It ranges from parties,…

Women's traditional dress has a few important characteristics. The dresses are usually tailored in a special style. All traditional dresses have thick ruffles that start at the shoulders and go out all the way down the dress. The dresses have no sleeves to cover the arms. They are usually the colors red, blue, and yellow. Another type of Costa Rica dress has a long ruffled skirt. This is usually made in shinny colored fabric. A white shirt is usually worn and a red cummerbund connects the dress at the waist. To top off all these wonderful dresses a flower is usually placed in the ear of the…
