Faculty Artist, Raul I. Rodriguez will be presenting, “An Evening of Tuba-Euphonium Chamber Music” Oct. 20 at the Performing Arts Center. Mr. Rodríguez teaches tuba and euphonium, is the instructor of the Bobcat Marching Band, Director of the Texas State Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble and a member of the music theory faculty.
Rodriguez prepares for an event like the one coming up by studying musical scores and determining which pieces of music will be challenging for the students yet also entertaining for the audience. Once he determines the selections, each group will have about …show more content…
4-5 pieces from which to select for their recital performance.
Most performances usually involve large ensemble in which all 18 students are combined into one large group. With chamber performances, the sound is different. Rodriguez says, “For large ensembles the effect is much more awesome in that the sound is much fuller and more present. With the smaller chamber groups, the sound becomes more transparent and clear allowing each instrumentalist to “shine” because each plays their own individual part.”
Joshua Arendt, a senior, says,” This performance will be the first time the Tuba Euphonium Quartet has played for a public ceremony We usually perform in concert halls or special venues such as museums or schools.”
Arendt has been very influenced by Mr.
Rodriguez saying, “He’s has changed my attitude towards music completely. I began as a music performance major at Texas State University my first year. But as I had more and more lessons with Mr. Rodriguez, I knew I wanted to do what he does. So I changed my major to music studies with the hope that I can ignite the flame for future students they way he lit mine.”
“The Texas State Music department has many great, accomplished professors, but being taught by Raul Rodriguez is the biggest honor I can think of.” Arendt also says, “I can not think of anyone else who has worked as hard as him and still place his student's interests before him. His knowledge of the instrument and of music, in general, is very extensive and he always has a solution to any problem put before him. He is a fountain of great quotes and ideas that can be applied to not only music but life as
well.”
Shane Matthew Zubek, a senior, says that “Professor Rodriguez has taught me that in order to be the best you can be, you need to put in your best effort to get there. If you want to get better at what you do, you need to give it your best at all times.”
Shane also says he’s been inspired to be more humble by seeing how modest Rodriguez is. “He never brags about any of his accomplishments. In fact, he hardly even mentions them. He was the tuba player for the soundtrack of “Spy Kids 2,” but the only way we know that is the movie poster in his office that we all ask about, urging him to tell us.”
Rodriguez who’s been awarded many amazing awards says he’s most proud of, “Being recognized as an outstanding teacher in the School of Music always brings a smile to my face. Teaching is what I enjoy doing the most.” It shows with all the hard work and dedication he gives his students.
Rodriguez and his students will be presenting a different performance than previous years.
This time, they will be performing as four small quartets with one full ensemble piece at the end.
Rodriguez and all his students are excited to perform at this can’t miss event on October 20 at the Performing Arts Center.
