Research Theme And Company

The research will be on a bus company, Rea Vaya. The theme that will be explored within the company is operations management, a core function of all businesses/organisations, involving the process where goods and services are provided.

Topic And Research Problem

Within the theme, the topic chosen is the effectiveness, efficiency and productivity of the operational system of Rea Vaya. Upon observation and experience, Rea Vaya is often offline, as the company is based on a prepaid smart card system. Therefore this frequent problem inhibits customers to load their cards with money. Furthermore the alternative option when the system is offline is to buy “single trip” tickets, which are seldom available. In addition, upon purchasing the alternative, receipts are not provided, therefore posing a possibility of theft amongst staff. Thus making it evident that there is a drawback within the operations management of Rea Vaya.

Research Question

Considering Rea Vaya’s operation management problems, the research is intended to explore the possible reasons for the lack of efficiency in the operations management and the effect it has on customers. Therefore the research question is: how does the effectiveness of the Rea Vaya operations management affect ridership?
