A person’s life can tell us so many stories about the world we are living in and how it can affect and change people. The Dolzura Cortez life story that had been put into movie tells us so many stories and realities that are currently happening nowadays. In the movie it shows us how the life of Dolzura started; a wife and a mother to her three kids. But like some of the family in the Philippine setting today, she also is receiving violence from her husband. And that is because she refuses to give sex to her husband. The reason is very shallow and absurd but the truth is it is really happening. Some wives in our society are often abused by their husbands from very absurd reasons in which they become helpless and being victimized by the dominance of men. It also tells us how the life in big cities and urbanized areas such as Manila have become so complex that morals are often ignored and just put aside. The fast pace of life in the cities create things and places to satisfy the needs and the desire of the people. Usually, these things are often temporary and can burst like a bubble. It can be blinding since it feels so good and satisfy the darkest desires of men. And in the movie, Dolzura was immediately consumed by the blinding lights of the city life and its leisure that she adapts the life very fast and got engaged into affairs to satisfy our desires for flesh. But fate can be very playful and cruel when we make poor choices and in the case of Dolzura, the consequences of her actions made a great impact to her life in a very negative way. Due to her behavior, she has gotten an illness and up to now, we have still no cure for it. And it is called AIDS. Unlike any other sexually-transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, AIDS can be very fatal to those who are suffering it. It disarms our immune system, rendering us defenseless against so many sicknesses around us. This is why those who are suffering from AIDS do not die from it, but rather

In the Colombian Society men had all the rights to do the things of their choice without any objections. The women had no other option but to surrender to them. In this essay I am going to talk about the Male Dominance in the Colombian society which kind of leads to suppression of women. The author of this book, Gabriel Garcia Marquez has indirectly depicted this aspect through the character or his friend Santiago Nasar. Not just Santiago but as well through the other character’s such as the Vicario brother’s. These characters show strong masculinity and also their behavior with the women (Santiago Nasar). This can be reflected on to the age or society the book was written in. This topic can be strengthened by examples from the text such Santiago’s behavior with Divina Flor and Ibrahim’s affair with Victoria and also the brothels convey a very strong sense about the men and their relationships. According to the text, it shows that men usually visit Maria Cervantes’s brothel. And they feel proud about this rather being shameful as the Colombian society accepts those sort of sexual desires and deeds. Also the importance of chastity amongst women reflects onto the male dominance. It proves that women had not much freedom to do what they like as they were under the control of men. The poor classes such as servants, talking about the women again such as Divina Flor they had no other option but to accept the things done by Santiago because they work for him. Also the scene when Angela is returned back home by Roman describes machismo again proving the fact that chastity is of a great importance. The murder of Santiago by the Vicario brother’s is an other scene where the machismo is put out clearly. Not just these many other scenes from the book expose this aspect in a more detailed way making the reader reflect…

It is seen in todays society, that there is a urgency for woman to be married and have kids by a certain age, and if you don't have kids you are often frowned upon. Likewise in traditional literature, certain female archetypes are often portrayed as being the virgins, the mother, the witch, and the whore. As the “writers of traditional literature have ignored woman and have also transmitted misguided and prejudiced views of them;” (The Feminist Approach) . They frequently show this by characterizing woman as someone who needs to be supported by a man, which leads to the constant urgency for them to be married to fill their ‘role’ in these societies. This desire for love can ultimately lead character’s to make irrational decisions. In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude and Michael Crummey’s Galore, characters often make irrational decisions based on their desire for love. This is frequently shown…

This film captivates audiences with its disturbing allegations and suspenseful twists. The novel starts off by presenting one face of violence in the story – the killings. It tells us that crime happens to everyone. No one is invulnerable to crimes. It can be anyone around us: a pregnant woman, a businessman, a driver, a teacher, a student, an adult or a kid. In the story, children about twelve or thirteen whose genitals, faces and hearts were removed are victimized. (pages 5 & 12) The [most] victims are “children of poor families.” (p. 13) The story is set in Payatas – a place which is known for its poverty. This fact somehow limits these victims from attaining justice. This idea will be discussed further later.…

My "About Me" speech that I just gave in my public speaking class last Tuesday was decent, however I kind of rushed it due to the nervousness I had. I opened up my speech by saying how I didn't have anything nearly as interesting to say about myself compared to the girl that had gone before me; I guess that was a nervous mechanism, since I already started doubting myself from the beginng. I spoke about my family first, because that's the most important thing in my life. I explained how I am the youngest of four kids .. Gave all of their Names (Lance, Clemjie, and Jane) and told where they went to college what that they majored in; as well as what they do now for a living. After that, I gave a brief background as to where I grew up and where I currently work. I also explained why and how I ended up going to Middlesex Community College; how I messed up on my loans for Coastal Carolina and etc. I told the class what my hobbies where (what kind of sports I played throughout highschool and throughout my life; cheerleading, field hockey, pole-vaulting, track, softball, etc. The main purpose of my speech was to inform my peers and my proffessor of my background as well as my hobbies and dislikes; such as my pure hate for my major- Accounting, and how I extremely dislike it. I started to get nervous and forget the order of how my speech was suppose to follow, and abruplty ended it with, "Sooo, that's about it."…

The last months of 2008 witnessed what is being called the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of 1929-30. The first indications of a serious crisis appeared in January 2008. On 15 January, news of a sharp drop in the profits of the Citigroup banking led to a sharp fall on the New York Stock Exchange. On 21 January a spectacular fall in share prices occurred in all major world markets, followed by a series of collapses. A number of American and European banks declared massive losses in their 2007 end of the year results.…

The fear of failure can affect our lives in many ways. I scored a 24 on the Fear of Failure test. According to McGee, experiences of failure dominate your memory and have probably resulted in a great deal of depression (McGee, 1998). The result of this test was a shock to me because I do not feel that I deal with depression. I went back and read the questions again and did not get a different result. McGee lets us know that deep healing needs to take place. I started to think back as to why I answered the questions to the test the way that I did. I realized that I because I fear, I often avoid participating in certain activities. I don’t put myself in the position to fail. I do fear failure when it comes to my family. As a mother, I want everything to be perfect for my family. I believe that I experience more anger than depression. This may be wrong but I feel that my purpose in life is to make my family’s life as easy as possible. I feel that if something is not going right in their lives, it’s probably my fault and I’m not doing what I’m supposed to do. Therefore, I worry a lot. I take pride in motherhood. When my kids…
