The Centralia Coal Mine No.5 blast was a tragic and preventable disaster that according to John Martin, “no one stopped.” With only 31 survivors a total of 111 hard working coal miners lost their lives on this dreadful day which to most of them was soon approaching. There were many factors that contributed to this tragedy and several alternatives that Driscoll Scanlan, the state inspector, could have focused on in order to help prevent this as well. Those alternatives included focusing on; the lack of efficient timing in responding to recommendations, the lack of follow through in holding some entity responsible when those recommendations did not get addressed, the lack of setting professional boundaries between the owners of the Centralia Coal Mine No.5 and government officials, and the lack of accountability on the managerial staff at the coal mine. I will also briefly address Scanlan’s motivation towards the Constitution and bureaucracy.`…

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), mining communities mostly depend on their ability to sell what they mine to make a living. So they explore all options to reach markets – and in this game, the price dictates the source. The DRC has its own rich mineral source that benefit both the rich and the poor and so far it’s benefitting the rich of other countries. The country has been living under constant dictatorship from the beginning of time till now even though the president is seen to bring a bit of growth to the economy. With constant growth of the rebel groups as well as militias the country has slight to no chance of democracy or freedom of the people. The intervention methods put in by the UN as well as the AU have proven to be…

Over the period of time Rio Tinto has been tainted with scandals. To gain the confidence of its stakeholders Rio Tinto should develop a communications strategy with them. Each of these stakeholders has their own concerns and expectations. Rio Tinto mineworkers are concerned about poor and hazardous working conditions and exploitation of their human rights. Recently there has been a dispute between the Munduruku Tribe and “wildcat miners”, in which several illegal miners had set up various mines on the Munduruku’s land in search of gold. To remove these miners on their land, the tribe’s leaders travelled to Brazil, demanding from the government to remove illegal miners on their territory. Unfortunately, a court action by the government could take years and years, thus the Munduruku Tribe decided to evict the illegal miners by themselves.…
“it is a tragic paradox of our time that poor nations with abundant resources should suffer unimaginably while their political leaders appropriate riches that might otherwise mitigate poverty and foster economic growth” said Edward Zwick, This is the case of sierra leone and their violence when a large numbers of diamonds were mined in violent and inhumane settings; As a consequence of the huge natural resources of some African countries the brutal civil conflicts were increasing and the rights of each african worker decrease in the way that the tragic results were higher, the loss of life, shocking human rights and the use of child soldiers were part of the normal violence environment that people had to support, The previously mention is a sign of an absent-minded government that is only concerned about money and forget about the well-living of their inhabitants. On the other hand there is the open-pit mining, another way of extract precious metals and abuse of the natural resources that the world count with, this process means digging out rock or minerals from the earth by their elimination from an open…
The villages are selfgoverned but will interact with one another (Life among the Yanomami). For about a thousand years the Yanomami people have lived in this region, and as of 1992 have been recognized legally as the region’s owners. This reserve, twice the size of Panama, is a site for large amounts of precious metal and also attracts lots of mining. Recently, 1000 miners were sent to the basin to begin work on the Yanomamo territory. This sudden interest in the gold found in this area, brings disease and fight over land.…
Michael Nest shares some of the dark and disturbing facts and figures of the minerals that are mined daily, there are an estimated 750,000 to 2,000,000 artisanal miners in the DRC pg. 37. In 2000, eastern DRC became enveloped in coltan fever, akin to the gold rushes of the 19th century in the United States. Conflict is not new to Congo” (Nest pg. 66). Between the amount of workers that are exploited for these minerals and the rush for the mineral brought by major corporations, show indeed why these minerals are considered conflict material.…
