READING REFLECTIVE SUMMARY ASSIGNMENT 2

Reading Reflective Summary

Assessment Scores

In chapter 7, Taking Notes From Reading Material, my scores for the pre-

assessment (550) and the post assessment (750) increased slightly. One process that

made my score increase was that I initially did not understand how to effectively highlight my material. Highlighting is so very critical because a person could waste time and energy when they could be doing other assignments. For a moment I thought the author had gone back into time and took a look at my notes from yesteryears. I was a perfect example of a passive learner who would highlight un-important phrases and sentences until I had a colored a lot of nothing. Active learners highlight less and try to grasp as much as they can while reading, thus avoiding re-reading. The highlighting issue was definitely a weakness of mine, but I will apply the techniques from the text to curb that problem. While not a great highlighter I can say that my note taking ability has always been a strong suit for me. I plan on taking some steps from the lesson to improve on that as well. Effective note taking saves time and makes learning easier to retain.

In Chapter 8, Improving Reading Comprehension, my pre-assessment scores (550) and my post assessment scores (650) are almost identical. I believe that to be because most of the reading I had never experienced before or it could have been due to the fact that I have been out of school a very long time. Nevertheless, there are certainly some habits that I need to build upon

My example for the Reading Literacy objective is reading the novel, Invisible Man. Throughout the journey of reading Invisible Man we’ve done pre-reading, reading, and post-reading activities and applied strategies from all three activities to other assignments. The second bullet of the reading literacy objective states “To apply pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading strategies to all reading assignments, including determining purpose and pre-reading vocabulary.” Before reading Invisible Man we read a multitude of different works of literature to better understand the time period in which the book had taken place. We also took notes during our reading and discussed our findings with the class as a whole. After reading, we completed…

Assessment Results QRI-6. The Qualitative Reading Inventory 6 (QRI-6) is an assessment that uses word lists and passages representing various grade levels to assess a student’s level of performance (Independent, Instruction, Frustration) for word recognition and reading comprehension. Overall, Kenadie was Instructional when orally reading both a fourth grade narrative passage (ON) and a fourth grade expository passage (OE). In word recognition, Kenadie scored Independent for both passages; when substituting unknown words, she used similar sound patterns (ON 100%, OE 80%) which changed meaning (ON 50%, OE 60%). In retelling, Kenadie retold 20% of the OE passage focusing mainly on main ideas [main ideas (40%), details (13.3%)] and retold…

Before I started the Graded Quiz, I reviewed the previous 2 Self Quizzes for Units 1 and 2. This really helped because the Graded Quiz was similar to all three Self Quizzes. Even though I reviews all three quizzes, I still did not score full marks on the Graded Quiz. I was still glad that I had reviewed them because I would probably get a lower grade on the Graded Quiz if I didn’t. I had 90 minutes which is basically an hour and a half which I thought was a lot of time, but by the time I started I realized that I would probably need more time. Luckily I completed all the questions in time and score 23/29, approximately 80%. I hope the other students did well on their Graded Quiz as…
