The research article name was Ready to Rumble: How Team Personality Composition and Task Conflict Interact to Improve Performance. The authors are Bret H. Bradley, Anthony C. Klotz, Bennett E. Postlethwaite, and Kenneth G. Brown. The article was published in 2013 by the Journal of Applied Psychology. The personality of team members needs to be considered when creating effective teams (Robbins & Judge, 2017). This study sought to examine whether there was a relationship between personality compositions, task conflict, and team performance. Bradley, Klotz, Postlethwaite, & Brown (2013) argued that openness to experience and emotional stability play moderating roles on the relationship between task conflict and team performance. …show more content…
There were two specific research hypotheses. The first hypothesis stated that “the average level of a team’s openness to experience would moderate the relationship between task conflict and team performance such that when openness is high, task conflict will positively relate to performance and when openness is low, task conflict will negatively relate to performance” (Bradley et al., 2013, p. 386). The second hypothesis stated that “the average level of a team’s emotional stability would moderate the relationship between task conflict and team performance such that when emotional stability is high, task conflict will positively relate to performance and when emotional stability is low, task conflict will negatively relate to performance” (Bradley et al., 2013, p. 387). These two hypotheses were based on previous research that found that people opened to experience engage on successful conflict resolution, are flexible, and promote open discussion on teams (Bradley et al., 2013). Moreover, it was found that emotional stable people engage on successful conflict resolution, are well adjusted, and tend to view themselves as others positively (Bradley et al., …show more content…
I think this study was done appropriately since the authors did a research literature review that supported their hypotheses, used objective measures of constructs, run statistical analysis, and discussed results and implications. One flaw of the research article was the lack of detail on the methods section. The authors do not provide any information regarding the setting where the research study took place. It does not specify whether students met in a classroom, research lab, or at a cafe. Also, as it was previously mentioned, they provide no demographic information. I believe it would be interesting to know if for example there were gender or ethnic differences. Also, the scales they used to measure task conflict and team performance only consisted of four items. I wonder whether adding more items or using another scale would have changed the research findings. If I could do the study again, I would make some changes. First, I would use another sample. Specifically, I would use an organizational setting to obtain a sample of workers to study whether the results are generalizable to the workplace. Second, I would use different measures. Specifically, I would use scales with more than 4 items to measure task
