G Ronald Reagan vs. Jimmy Carter
The 1980 election hosted the 49th presidential election between republican California governor Ronald Reagan, democratic president Jimmy Carter and Independent John
Anderson. The election ended in a very predicted landslide with 44 states voting for Reagan and only 6 states voting for Carter. The reason for this gigantic landslide is because of the way the two gentleman. presented themselves. In
Crisis of Confidence by Jimmy Carter his speech has a very impugning quality. He speak’s out about the energy crisis in America relating to foreign oil, and even the recent inflation as well as recession. He states, “As president I need your help. So I decided to reach out and listen to the voices of America.”
Although this depicts him as a weak and unreliable president, instead of saying that he need’s the people’s help he should instead say that he is going to help the people to show his leadership and strength. He also say’s that the American people are losing it’s faith in the
American government which would in part be some of his fault as he was president. Also in the video that Carter gave this speech he lacked motivation, and a vigor. His voice was monotone and the overuse of hand signals and the frequent staring off was displeased. On the other hand Ronald Reagan who was running for the republican nominee presented himself with optimistic qualities and talked about unifying the country as one, instead of splitting it up into two parties. In his announcement speech for Presidency he is outspoken and stands up when he is talking which displays leadership qualities. In the only debate that took part between both nominees in 1980 Reagan gave his points clearly, and with authority while Carter still lacked that presidential vigor. Although, most notably it must’ve came down
to the closing sentences of each nominee. Carter failed to keep eye contact with the audience
and
