“Miriam”, by Truman Capote, is a short story about an old woman, Mrs. H.T. Miller. She meets a girl, Miriam. Miriam is an odd girl that is attracted to Mrs. Miller. Mrs. Miller first is not freaked out by the girl but then later, she is scared of the girl and wants her to leave. A main question about the story is that, is Miriam real or fake? Miriam is obviously real. The first reason that Miriam is real is because Miriam can interact with real world objects. This is a reason because most ghosts can’t interact with objects but Miriam could. Some evidence to the theory is that Miriam takes the vase and throws it onto the hard ground (8). This is relevant to the theory because she had been interacting with the real world objects, which ghosts shouldn’t be able to. Additionally if Miriam wasn’t real, then how would she be able to obtain real life objects? Another reason to prove Miriam’s existence is that she had obtained real life objects. This reason is true because on Miriam walks up to Mrs. Miller on the cold snowy day and asks her to buy her a ticket to watch the movie, then she hands her a 2 nickels and a dime (2). The reader can see that Miriam can touch and obtain real life objects so that Miriam is real. Ghosts can’t really touch objects so Miriam is real. In conclusion, I say that Miriam is a real person. The reasoning behind her being attracted to Mrs. Miller is that Miriam’s father abandoned her and she believed that Mrs. Miller was an easy old woman that she could manipulate in order for her to have a roof over her head and food is her stomach. Miriam succeeded my driving Mrs. Miller crazy and she made Mrs. Miller do many things that she wouldn’t ever do before. For example Mrs. Miller bought a couple almond cakes and a lot of cherries. Miriam had successfully manipulated Mrs. Miller.
