Jennifer Pozner discusses in her article Ghetto Bitches, China Dolls, and Cha-Cha Divas the way that America’s Next Top Model portrayed women of different backgrounds, and how these women were stereotyped for the sake of entertainment. Pozner shows that one of the most shown stereotypes on the show was the “Black bitch” in the words of Tyra Banks herself (qtd. in 399). Women on this show are not accurately represented most of the time however, which was shown to be especially true in the case of Tiffany. To television producers these shows are an easy way to make money, so they have no reason to stop pushing out show after show hoping one will become yet another cultural sensation. This leads to a drop in quality in the shows that they are producing, and encourages more outlandish and spiteful action in order to draw in views with the promise of contestants fighting or collapsing into tears. This kind of programming is demeaning to its contestants and feeds off of viewers enjoying watching others in emotionally compromising situations.
