Ralph Waldo Emerson once said.“Some books leave us free and some books make us free.” In today’s generation if you were to go up and ask a young scholar what was the last book they read and how long ago. Some will surprise you and say last week, or that just the other day they had read a book, but the sad reality is that plenty of those adolescents either won’t be able to tell you or the that time it was it was quite a long time ago. Reading allows us to express ourselves in the utmost potential.
Today’s youth should read for many reasons. Some of those key reasons are due to the fact that reading stimulates the mind. When someone reads a book that they can relate to or enjoy they become in depth with the topic at hand will often educate themselves on a topic, but they do not even realize it. Think about it, if a child who struggled at reading was able to relate to a style of writing or fiction like that of Anthony Horowitz’s novel series ‘Alex Rider’ they will want to continue to read and become more engaged with the novel. When I was younger I didn’t really know what I should do which almost caused me to think that every day of my life I was having anxiety because I had no direction. I started to read almost every single day which brought out a side of myself which wasn’t afraid to settle down and realize that there’s more to life then to always be doing something. Reading also brought the world to my attention and different career paths I could go in life whether I wanted to be like Santiago and live my life at sea, or if after reading Still Alice I would want to be a surgeon trying to cure diseases like Alzheimer’s. Every time that a new book was in my hands I would only imagine the path it would take me throughout my life. Reading brings out the true you and that’s something that no one can take
