Reba Mcentire: Climbing Over The Wall Of Life
Climbing Over the Wall of Life

You have to have three things to succeed in life as McEntire says, “To succeed in life, you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone, and a funny bone” (McEntire). Reba McEntire could always say great things about life. Her family were very strong hearted people who taught her how to survive life. What this quote means to me is that if you cannot wish for things, stand up for yourself, nor have humor, then you are destined to fail in life.
McEntire’s words are basically the definition of life. Life is like a big wall that you have to climb over if you want to be successful. What Reba is saying is that you have to have a wishbone, a backbone, and a funny bone to get over that wall. As you get older in life, that wall is never going to get shorter. It will keep getting taller and taller, and it will feel as if you will never get to the top to climb over. However, when you have the three things that Reba said you need in order to succeed in life, that wall will turn into a tiny mouse that you can just walk over.

Reba says that people need a wish bone meaning that you need to have a wish, a want, a need, a dream, or something else to serve as motivation and a goal for you to strive towards success. She also says that people need a backbone. This means that you need to have endurance, fortitude, self-confidence, or something to keep you going when life gets tough and you face opposition. McEntire also says that people need a funny bone. The meaning of the funny bone is that you need to have a sense of humor, a desire to look for a bright cloud behind all of the dark clouds. You need something to put a smile on your face when you want to run away and feel sorry for

This chapter which introduced me to Lia’s family was interesting. I was shocked to read that in her mother’s country of Laos, Lia would have been born by her mother squatting on the floor! They also used special created remedies to solve health issues without relying on hospitals or clinics. It was also interesting to read how important the Hmong people believed in sprits and how their life decisions where decided around the sprit actions. For example, they believed that male sprit’s held up their house roof, if the male’s placenta was buried near the central pillar of the house. Lia was even blessed by the elders because her parents believed that it was a way of protecting her from ever getting sick. If anything, reading this chapter quickly gave me a quick preview of the clash that Lia’s cultural beliefs will have with the American doctors when she gets sick in the future chapters. However, I’m hoping that this book will pick up a little faster and have less history moving forward (being honest lol)…

In “the war of the wall” by Toni Cade Bambara, the painter girl keeps being called “rude” even though she didn't do much to have the kids call her that. The story shows the struggles in America while also teaching not to make assumptions about people and their motives, bambaras use of irony, and a theme that makes the message of the story interesting and exciting to say the least. The biggest theme in the story is integration, it is started at the start of the story when the narrator says “big kids have been playing handball on the wall since so called integration when the crazies cross town poured cement into our pool so we couldn't use it.” This quote shows how racism impacted the children, even after integration white people still did not…

The song "Landslide" performed by Fleetwood Mac and written by their lead singer Stevie Nicks illustrates the struggles of aging and being infringed with corruption. She utilizes free verse in both her rhythm and rhyme scheme to describe her evolution as the years have past. Her tone is initially reflective with a hint of insecurity, but by the end of the song it morphs into confidence and acceptance. Nicks uses figurative language such as metaphor, conceit, and symbols to create images that express the unsureness she is trying to overcome. Stevie Nicks utilizes many literary elements to express the endeavors of growing old.…

The poem “Where There’s a Wall” by Joy Kogawa describes the historical event of internment or concentration camps using a wall as a metaphor. The author does not outright identify and describe this unfortunate historical event but readers can use the imagery and symbols along with their historical knowledge to be able to determine that the author could be writing about a person in an internment or concentration camp. The poem is universal in the fact that it may not be interpreted in a historical way by one that does not have as much knowledge about history. These type of readers may interpret it as the wall being an obstacle in the way of a goal. This aspect of the poem makes it very interesting because it can be interpreted in many unique ways to different readers.…

Individual characteristics and traits are what initiate and drive an ever-changing society. Individuality sparks innovation, keeps life captivating, and forces society to continue to grow. However, society also is the first place where individuality is not accepted or misunderstood. The idea of not fitting into society can be viewed as a painful experience. In Susan Musgrave’s poem “You Didn’t Fit,” she aims to show how no one fits into social norms. The poem intends to show how people believe they need to reach certain standards to be accepted and to find love, but in reality, everyone should be trying to stand out.…
