Repeating the past is very difficult and it leads to very hard times for the characters but it especially leads to the downfall of Gatsby’s hopes and dreams. For five years of Gatsby’s life his dream has been to get Daisy back. He wants Daisy to think he’s successful but he earned his money illegally. Another downfall of Gatsby’s dream is how he lied about who was driving the car that killed Myrtle. Nick asks him if Daisy was driving and he says to Nick “yes, but of course i’ll say I was”( Fitzgerald, 137) This shows how much Gatsby loves Daisy but it also leads to the destruction of him because when George Wilson figures out who owns the yellow car that hit Myrtle, he goes and kills Gatsby without any hesitation.
