As children fail to meet academic standards in the classroom, teachers assume that the student is at fault. Those who fail to meet work expectations or exhibit problematic behaviors may be placed in referral. How do those who teach in low income environments make decisions regarding referral? As a teacher it is important to distinguish learning disabilities from behaviors that come from living in poverty, so that referral isn’t the only option. Teachers who come from middle class backgrounds may not be able to relate to students who live in low income environments. The reason for this is because of the cross cultural boundaries between teacher and student, which may influence their perception of students in poverty. As stated in Learning …show more content…
Families that live in poverty stricken areas must work longer hours, in order to make rent and put food on the table. As stated in Why Urban Parents Resist Involvement in their Children’s Elementary Education “Many of the parents worked. However, their jobs consisted of low wage, low skill employment” (McDermott & Rothenberg 2000, p.3). Majority of teachers in the study made a conscious effort to reach out to parents through notes and comments on their child’s notebook. Although parents received notification of their child’s progress, there were many factors that prevented them from having face to face communication, such as a lack of free time or transportation. These parents wanted the best education for their children, but could not afford to attend parent teacher conferences. Parents gave insight into the complications that prevented them from being involved in their child’s education, but they also praised teachers for reaching out, such as Mrs. Desantis who took time out of her day to visit the housing projects.     Yet, it is crucial that we expand the dialogue to include parent knowledge about school settings, even when that knowledge conflicts with our own. Develop trust. Parents affirm the importance of establishing trust. One mother attributes a particular teacher's good turnout for parent/teacher conferences to her ability to establish a “personal relationship” with parents. Another comments on her need to be reassured that the school is open, that it's OK to drop by “anytime you can.” In the opportunities we provide for involvement, we must regularly ask ourselves what messages we convey through our dress, gestures, and talk. In one study, for example, a teacher described her school's open house in a middle-class neighborhood as “a cocktail party without cocktails” (Lareau 1987). This is the sort of “party” that many parents wouldn't feel comfortable attending. Fear was a recurrent theme among the parents we interviewed: fear of appearing foolish or being misunderstood, fear about their children's academic standing. One mother explained: Parents feel like the teachers are looking at you, and I know how they feel, because I feel like that here. There are certain things and places where I still feel uncomfortable, so I won't go, and I feel bad, and I think maybe it's just me. This mother is relaying how it feels to be culturally, linguistically, and ethnically different. Her body of knowledge does not match the institutional knowledge of the school and she is therefore excluded from home/school conversations. Build on home experiences. Our assumptions about the home environments of our students can either build or sever links between home and school. An assumption that “these kids don't live in good environments” can destroy the very network we are trying to create.     When a child is in elementary school there are a number of things a parent can particpicate in with their child they are able to go on school field trips, eat lunch, volunteer or even attend class with their child. As the child gets into middle or high school, the options are limited to what the parent can do such as sporting events. Children may also decide that they no longer want their parents involved in school with them, because they may feel embarrassed around their peers.     After watching the documentary “Waiting for ‘Superman,” I came to the conclusion that the home and neighborhood environment are critical factors in a child’s education and overall wellbeing. For example, when we examine the home environment of Anthony, Daisy, Francisco, and Bianca, we can see that most of these children live in low-income neighborhoods, and that their parents or legal guardians sometimes have to work two jobs to sustain their family.     Identifying disabilities are often difficult. Often times when children are identified at a young age are able to get services under the Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA). In some cases, the child is not diagnosed early and they are placed in the pre-referral process. Schools have implemented the pre-referral process, under the revision of Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA). The pre-referral process is recognizing, developing, and applying different teaching tactics for children with documented problems in the classroom before the child is referred to special education. Through the pre-referral process students are now receiving the interventions they need, since the revision and implementation of IDEA. When a problem is noticed, the teacher should review any information that will help understand any issues the student is having. In the case, in which the teacher cannot find information, the teacher can gather information by charting and observing the students behavior in the classroom and other settings. The teacher can try interventions to help minimize the issue.
