This essay is aim to reflect on my development of Academic and Professional skills in year 1. I will reflect myself in three different skills, they are communication, teamwork and leadership. I will also compare my skills between the start of my year and the end of my year. And through my reflection, to find out my strengthens and my weakness.
Communication
Communication plays a very important role in my school life and influences my development of academic and professional skills. During my university life, I will get in touch and communicate with people nearly everyday. No matter talking about school works or something not related to the academic and professional, communication still helps to maintaining networks and relationships, and to developing goals and plans (John kotter: 1982,1999).
I remember I first came to the University, I am a Chinese with no friends or partners , I was feeling lonely and not motivated to go to tutorial at all. Until I met my housemate, whom is also a Chinese girl, study in Accounting in University of Hull. Due to we are both Chinese; there are no culture differences between her, and me so we quickly became friends. After the first semester of going to tutorials and lectures together, I found out that she have made a lot of foreign friends, but I still haven’t make any friends in University. I started to realized the importance of social intelligence (table 1). Daniel Goleman argues that social intelligence is also a special capability, which leads to management effectiveness.
In the second semester, there are few group projects, and I started to experience to work as a team. Social intelligence could be improve through experience and training (Buchanna and Huczynski, 2010 ). During the interaction with tutors and group mates, I discover that emotional intelligence of group mates bring success of the group projects rather than the technical skills (Goleman,1998).
