On November 11th, 2016, I had clinical at Memorial Hospital’s Labor and Delivery floor. I was working with an individual that was a multiparous patient, and had a history of precipitous labor. The mother spoke English and her husband spoke Spanish. This woman reported that she wanted to do this delivery naturally, without an epidural. When I first met the patient, I introduced myself and asked if she knew what sex her baby was; she told me it was a boy and her husband and her were going to name the baby after him. The patient went on to telling me how excited they were to finally have a boy, as they have all girls at home. This conversation seemed normal, and I was excited for this family. The doctor ordered an evaluation by a psychologist, talked to the family, and did an ultrasound to demonstrate that there was not another baby. I found this situation odd, and was wondering if this mother had something psychological going on? Or maybe she was telling her husband, who only spoke Spanish, that she was expecting a boy, to make him happy because they have all girls. Regardless of why this situation played out the way it did, I think therapy with Comprehensive Health would be beneficial. The therapy session can be held in both English and Spanish, which is helpful for the Spanish speaking husband. The mother and father, should go to a positive parenting program, in case, there is resentment against their new daughter, as it seems they may have subconsciously wanted a boy. As well as, the mother may need to talk to the therapist to discover why she claimed that she was having a son. Was this because she was afraid her husband would leave her if they had another daughter? Or is there something psychological doing on? Because the cause of this situation is so unknown, comprehensive health would be perfect, due to a wide range of therapy programs that could assist this patient and
