Working in the field of human services is a unique, yet rewarding career. Human services workers engage with diverse populations and carry different titles to include counselors, case managers, milieu therapists, social workers, etc. Regardless of what title a human service worker may hold, communication between a client and professional is vital. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a client from a particular background and address his presenting issues. It will review how I would interview my client to include specific communication techniques, ways I would establish a working relationship, discuss possible boundary issues, and recommendations or referrals to certain groups for this client.…
The four major themes of human services are problems in living; human beings not being able to meet their own needs all the time. Second, the growth number of problems in modern world helps with people not able to get help from family or the community. The current economic and political climate has had a profound affect on the human services fields and has impacted those served in a very real and direct way. The Affordable Healthcare Act (AHA) for example has created such a backlash in the political and economic arenas that it has even caused the United States government to shut down due those who resist and fight its implementation and continues to be a heated debate. The relationship between economic and political events to the current trends in the human services field is becoming more and more intertwined as it geared toward providing services and meeting the growing needs of people everywhere, but with the human services funding deficits and cutbacks and with the political constraints causing complications, these needs are being threatened. Economic problems such as the recession and cuts in government spending and political problems such as the fight against the AHA have caused a lot of direct cuts to the human services programs and are not allowing the clients to be treated properly and for some clients there is no treatment at all. The economic and political events of today rule the trends of today’s society, by not possessing readily available services for those in need.…
The Human Services profession is an occupation where one is not limited to do just one job or one sense of duty. I discovered the profession is a more of a mission rather an occupation where one who is pursuing this career must be caring, patient, willing to set aside one own personal viewpoint and must be able to work with a wide range of diversity. More importantly, able to perform on a professional level, with the client’s best interest, despite what one may feel is justifiable.…

The purpose of this paper is to write about the essential characteristics and skills of mental health human services workers. When discussing the fundamental characteristics of a human services worker, Team B felt that communication skills are vital. Without rapport and connection with the client, other skills cannot be effective. Of course, the most fundamental ingredients for a human services worker are a compassionate, patient, caring heart and a desire to see each individual achieve a personal best in all areas of life. “Without vibrant meaning, purpose, and direction, our life can never flower” (Doherty, 2009).…

It is common for people to expect something in return for helping someone out or providing them with a specific service. It is also very common for people to expect to have to give up something in return for asking for help or specific services. While not everyone believes that those who are in need should be helped, there are opposing positions which feel that reform is a way to retract and counteract the situation the for the person in need.…

In the context of human service words sometimes take different meanings. A problem specifies the term that must be used in the eligibility rules determining who is and who is not entitled to benefits or services and specifies the general goals to be achieved. A good example of this would be determined if someone was eligible for Medicaid or needed another insurance program. A policy typically described as a principle or rule to guide decisions and achieve rational outcomes. The regulation of the practice of abortions would be a type of policy one might look into. A program is a plan of action to accomplish a specified end. This is very critical because the public and the individual legislator need to know what the interest of the group truly is. A new law being passed in the human service field would definatly be a good example of this (Chambers).…
People with mental illness are struggling with the symptoms and disabilities that result from several mental illnesses. At the same time they are challenged by the prejudice and stereotypes that society hold about them which caused them social isolation, deprivation from basic needs like employment opportunity, safe housing and health care(Corrigan and Watson,2002). In 2006 the career network introduced evidence based practice ‘Supported Employment’ program as its new service model to provide employment services to the tenants of CUCS’s supportive housing sites. The reason they implemented “supported employment’ program on the fact that a growing body of research shown the most effective approach of helping individuals who have a mental illness achieve employment. The first group observed for this assignment is an interdisciplinary group within my clinical setting comprising of a psychiatrist, social worker, mental health case manager and a patient. This interdisciplinary team works together to enhance relationships with the patient and improve collaboration among health care providers. The plan for recovery of patients is coordinated by all members of the team as each member can bring a level of expertise the other member cannot. This team was chosen because many people living with mental illness require the aid from more than one professional. Many of these patients require housing, employment, social assistance, counselling and support. Psychiatrists, social workers, case managers, occupational therapists and more come together as a formal team to combine skills and resources to provide guidance and information for the recovery of these patients.…
