To be a probation officer there is no specific major that is needed, however it is required that an officer have earned a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college to be considered for this position (Focus 2). Common majors that are found in this occupation are Sociology, Psychology, Social work, or Criminology, these majors help one to understand the way peoples’ minds work and how groups work together. Christopher Newport has a study abroad program in the country of South Africa called Social Justice in Leadership. This specific study abroad program combines aspects from my leadership minor with aspects of the criminology fields. The class is designed to teach student about the pursuit of social justice in Cape Town, South Africa. The trip is $4,500 which includes airfare, ground transportation, accommodations group activities and tours, group trips, University of Cape Town registration, international health insurance. However, it does not include tuition and most meals. In addition to Lectures at the University of Cape Town, there are historical and cultural excursions to places such as the Republic of South Africa Parliament and Cape Peninsula. It provides firsthand experience before having to commit to the occupation. Fairfax country has an extraordinary amount of internship opportunities; however, it is required for most that the intern must be 21 years old. The internship I have chosen to explore is the probation unit by completing the internship, it requires a junior level standing as an undergraduate student, and be able to commit to the internships for preferably two semesters. This internship includes going to violation hearings and trials to learn the responsibilities of a probation officer, shadowing to gain more knowledge about what the job entails day to day. I will be attending violation and detention hearing, visiting youth facilities, and participating in meetings to learn appropriate record keeping methods. I will also have to work directly with the juveniles by interviewing those on probation, conducting investigations to find appropriate resources to help clients. From this experience I will have meet plenty of people in which to network with, giving me an advantage during my job search. I could have a potential job at that specific office, if not there is always a possibility of getting a letter or
