Similarly, the other Wes Moore’s grandmother Alma on his mother’s side died when she was a young teen. Alma lost her life when her body rejected the new kidney and her parents moved to help raise her children. This chapter also shed light on discrimination, trusting your instincts, and the true nature of people. The author’s father was casted aside because of where he lived, how he looked, and his unfamiliar name; the other Wes Moore’s grandmother told her mother that she didn’t trust the hospital based on poor treatment before. Then, the author’s older sister’s father stopped being involved in her life after the death of her stepfather; proving he didn’t be in her live in the first place. The final two ideas I found interesting was being true to yourself and having common sense. When the author moved to the Bronx he was enrolled at the Riverdale Country School because his mother thought that would be best for him. I know as I continue on with my life that I will be faced with choices that can heavily impact me, but I have to remember the future consequences. The second concept will be used in my life by supporting my family and vice versa especially when the unfortunate happens. Fortunately, I have not experienced losing a family member or someone close to me, but it’s important to remember that they will always have your back. They will be the foundation that keeps you up when any event knocks you down. I will also incorporate how others perceive me because of where I live, what I look like, etc. From the book, I know that it’s crucial to get a second opinion especially when it pertains to my health. Then, trusting your instincts can be applied to my life by following it when necessary because sometime the best opinion you can receive is from yourself. Finally, knowing that people have two sides to them will help me in life because it can prevent me from being taken advantage of and help me advise others of this person.
