Reflection Paper 1
1 What do you think of when you think of the words power and influence? What sorts of associations and attitudes do these terms evoke?
When thinking about the word power, the first thing came into my mind is the ability to make thing happen and influence people by the capability or authority you have.
For my understanding, the influence is ability to take advantage of the power you have to affect people’s thoughts and behaviors, and, ultimately, admit your ideas and follow your directions. The power and influence seems very strong, and controllable words, but actually, for my understanding, the power and influence need to be take advantage carefully and softly deal with the relationship with others.
2 How powerful and influential do you feel? Why?
In the daily time, I am not quite powerful because I am always rather to play the roles of follower than a leader, and I am not aggressive enough to fight for power when there is an opportunity. However, to an extent, I can influence people well. I can communicate with people well and express my opinions in a proper way. People are easily accept my ideas and influenced by my personality.
3 What do you think are barriers (if anything) to your acquiring and exercising more power and influence?
The interpersonal skill is one of the most barriers to my acquiring and exercising more power and influence. When acquiring power and exercising the influence, the interpersonal skill is a significant element to take advantage of them successfully. With higher-level interpersonal skill, people are more easily to admit the power you have and influence by you.
Another barrier to acquire and exercise power and influence for me is lack of confidence. Facing the opportunity to acquire and exercise power, I am not positively enough to fight for it. The reason for that is because sometimes I don’t have the confidence. I don’t believe myself that I could handle the power well.

Power: the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. While this is the dictionary definition, power can be viewed in several different manners. Michel Foucault took a different approach on this concept by developing his own theory on the phenomenon of power through his observations on subjects ranging from school discipline to administration systems. A writer named Jonathan Gaventa described Foucault’s work stating it “marks a radical departure from previous modes of conceiving power and cannot be easily integrated with previous ideas, as power is diffuse rather than concentrated…” Foucault’s unique was miles apart from many orthodox perspectives of power; his idea was that power is everywhere.…

A way I also perceive this same idea of power is that the higher of the level you have the easier it becomes for them to control and influence the public with littler resistance. For example look at the president of the United States many people love him and he can almost do anything he wants; though you might say that many people also don’t like him this is because of a comparison, he runs against others for office so there are some contrasting factors. For me I can easily see power in everyday life, although it may not be how I view power when I picture it in my head. A way that I often see on a daily basis is direct control over someone else. Some example of this may include your teacher failing you if you do not do what they ask or a personal and ongoing one for me is my mother threatening to not let me go to see my favorite band in the summer unless I do everything she asks, and believe me the list gets daunting.…
