The Incredibly Entertaining and Wonderfully Invigorating Walnut Creek City Council Meeting When I attended the Walnut Creek City Council meeting, I was quite surprised to discover that people still do the pledge of allegiance. Not since my illustrious elementary school career have I heard the harmony of the pledge resound throughout a room, and I indeed thought the song was now dead. Yet to my surprise, there it was, being spoken in unison at the beginning of a city council meeting. I was even more surprised that I still remembered the words. As I stood and placed my hand over my heart, a smile ran across my face, as I remembered innocent years filled with

Today, my perspective on government, local or otherwise, is unfortunately jaded. Between the current white house administration and the state of our voting system, I have found that my political efficacy is constantly being diminished. However, when I attended my local city council meeting, I was pleasantly surprised at how people I know were actually involved in shaping the legislation for our city. I even knew one of the city council members. His son swam on the same swim team as I did growing up. I even cut his lawn. The simple experience of seeing someone I considered a regular citizen be seated in a position to directly effect change invigorated my political outlook. And once we got through the doldrums of the meeting, I was pleasantly dismayed that I was actually enjoying …show more content…
All city council members were present, and consisted of Mayor Pro Tempore Justin Wedel, Loella Haskew, Cindy Silva, Kevin Wilk, and, of course, Mayor Rich Carlson. Afterwards, it took ten minutes just to approve the minutes from the previous meeting. Then, they adopted ordinances from the previous meeting and approved the December calendar, which took a striking 30 minutes. However, after all that (most of which, I must admit, I didn’t pay attention to) and after the mandatory request for reports from the councilors (of which there were none), the meeting started picking up

The Okaloosa County Commissioners meeting held on 12/2/2014 was conducted in a formal manner, and they used the Robert Rules of Order throughout the meeting. My immediate reaction to this meeting was that it seemed closed to the public and intimidating. I was surprised that the beginning started with a prayer. Items on the agenda moved quickly, and at the end each section they open the meeting to the public for comments.…

She whispered, “You’ll never know how much I love you”. As the person living on the child end of the parent-child relationship, it was wonderful to hear, even under the horrific conditions we found ourselves. It gives credence to that saying, “tell the people you love you love them because you’ll never know if you’ll ever get the chance again”.…

The image of you is still painted in my mind like a canvas painting hung in an art gallery. You bought so much joy to me that day and I will always remember you because of this. Not to mention that you always lived up to your promise of coming to see me, no matter the circumstances. The sound of your voice during every visit was enough to bring a smile to my face and to cheer me up in a circumstance which this would not have been possible…

I want to see more of my fellow high students be admitted into UC schools, the protection of women’s and the LGBTQ community’s rights, everyone having access to healthycare, senior citizens getting the benefits they worked for, and more. The idea that positive change can happen in the city I was raised in drove me to wake up the morning to canvass, make hundreds of calls, and push high school students to be more involved in local politics. Back then, I would never have believe my actions as a high school girl can impact my hometown as a whole. If there is one thing in life that I am proud of, it is my participation and leadership in helping Ro Khanna become the congressman for California’s 17th…

As adults, American citizens leave behind a legacy every day that they exercise their rights. This includes participating in elections, whether it be on a local or national level. We can clearly see the legacies that our elected officials leave on the citizens. Here in my hometown, our city councilmen decided to implement a tax on the water bill that would be applied over the course of the next three years in order to renovate our dilapidated roads. While many people cried out in outrage because they saw the immediate effects that the tax had on their monthly bill, many more failed to realize that the long term effects of the roads being repaired far outweighed the slight increase on their sewage rates. These councilmen, elected by the citizens, are leaving behind a legacy for their town in the form of better roads. On the national level, when we vote and elect for presidents, we are shaping the future of our nation. It could be argued that the presidents of this country have greatly influenced and shaped the way America is today. This is evident in monumental ways: Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery, FDR signed the New Deal, and Teddy Roosevelt headed the Panama Canal project. When you are demonstrate your rights and actively complete your civic duties, you are leaving behind a legacy, no matter how small it may…

The Meeting open with the city accountant presenting a general financials report. She spent most of her time reporting on the expenditures the city is required to pay out to Memorial Health system, which from the way they were speaking I understood there was some sort of legal settlement they have to pay out on. Also discussed the cost of some handicapped access renovations to the hospital and the building codes at certain access points according to the current plans, and the costs to the city to execute these plans. There was also a request asking for a $500,000 increase to fix some required drainage repairs, to install some slip lines to cover failing copper water lines on Powers Avenue. And the last specific Item they discussed during this time was the cost and procedure of doing the mail in ballots for the April 2015 elections.…

The city council meeting could have been interesting if it hadn't dragged on for so long. At first I wasn't sure of what was going on because I couldn't find where they were at on the agenda. I finally found my place when they were doing the announcements and presentations. This part of the meeting took the most time, but I guess it was the most important. They gave six different presentations. The first was a proclamation in recognition of Business Appreciation Week. Four people went up on stage to accept the proclamation and the Pres./ CEO gave a speech. Next was the presentation of a certificate in recognition for Costco Wholesale. The received the BRACE award for "Retail Business of the Year." Dr. Min-Lee Cheng then went up to accept a Proclamation in recognition of "Mosquito and Vector Control and West Nile Virus Awareness Week.…

After the introduction the minutes from the last meeting were read by the group’s treasurer, this was the first role I could identify in the group. The treasurer took the task role of facilitator. After the reading of the minutes the leader asked for comments. One member asked if there could be another vote on changing the meeting time from 5:30 pm to 7:30pm, she started stating why and the treasurer cut her off by saying we put that issue to vote last week and it was passed to remain 5:30. The…

Though this was primarily by design, I found myself somewhat taken aback by the lack of engagement with participants and the way NACAC staff and leadership presented information during the update and assembly preview. For a period of two hours, approximately 9 individuals addressed the audience, during what was largely a massive unload of information, decisions – some of which had only been previously discussed amongst the board, others of which were discussed solely among a few high ranking NACAC leadership staff with little to no input from the greater leadership. One of these decisions was notification to all present that, beginning in 2017, future “collaborative and partnership” meetings such as this one would separate the board, president’s council, and committee chairs. They informed those in attendance that, not only would there not be time to collaborate, but the meetings would not be scheduled in the same month or in the same city because it was too expensive for the association to bring all parties and staff together for a single meeting. Instead, the NACAC leadership staff proposed future planning and collaboration could be done remotely. This top down decision not only failed to take into account the purpose behind the opportunity to collaborate in person with individuals across the country, but also proposed moving one of the meetings from July to the month of November – one of the busiest…
