Wire Tapping
My topic that I’m going to talk about is wiretapping, the history, how it is used, and how people feel about it.
Wiretapping began in the early days when they had a telegraph system was invented in 1844 there were many human operators to take messages, so it was easy for law enforcement to intercept other peoples messages.
Then there was the modern day telephone that was that has voice communication technology that was invented by Alexander Graham Bell but even then law enforcement agencies found a way to listen to peoples calls.
After century of wiretapping without any laws or acts the congress passed an act called the Federal Communications Act in 1934. It states
"no person not being authorized by the sender shall intercept any communication and divulge or publish the existence, contents, substance, effect, or meaning of such intercepted communications to any person …" this doesn’t mean the wiretapping was outlawed but only the discloser of information in wiretapping.
Thirty four years later the congress passed the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act in 1968, the first federal law to restrict wiretapping.
It sates “To safeguard the privacy of innocent persons, the interception of wire or oral communications where none of the parties to the communication has consented to the interception should be allowed only when authorized by a court of competent jurisdiction and should remain under the control and supervision of the authorizing court."
From my understanding of this law is to insure the safety of innocent people the court must get authorization of a properly qualified jurisdiction to be allowed to wiretap.
In 2001 Congress passes the Patriot Act, this act is to improve the government's ability to stop future terrorist attacks, since 9/11 happened.
This helps to streamline or little resistance to the process of getting the necessary warrants to eavesdropping.
Then in 2002 Bush
