Reflective Essay: My Mission Trip To Ecuador
This past summer I had the incredible opportunity to go on a mission trip in Ecuador where I worked in an orphanage partaking in labor work, as well as, traveled out into the cities bordering Quito to organize VBSs (vacation bible schools)in startup churches . In beginning of the trip I expected the work I would participate in would be life changing to those in its wake. My expectations were highly set and the outcome did not match up; in fact, the outcome was quite the opposite. In the short week I spent in Ecuador, I realized almost immediately that the problems that needed to be mended were much larger than a group of fifty people could overcome in one week. There was so much need, and an insufficient amount of resources to provide for it. Nevertheless, I was …show more content…
It takes time for effects to be noticed, but each small accomplishment adds up and eventually true progress begins to occur. I intend to bring about the process of significant change by involving myself in international outreach. I do not want to solely change my world, but I want to change the world in its entirety. It may seem like an unachievable goal, but it gives me something to strive to accomplish. Becoming a doctor has always been an aspiration of mine, not because the salary provides security or the credibility that comes with the MD next to my name but because I want to see and be in the midst of change. I aspire to be able to help people mend physically, mentally, and spiritually. The physical cares bring about opportunity to impose change of the mental wellness and in spiritual guidance. Doctors without borders has always had an intrigued me by providing the opportunity to be a part of significant change brought about by small factors. I would get the chance to improve a life or, if not improve, at least make the adverse effects more manageable. Change is what I want to be, what I want to see, and what I seek to make

Alex, and that tree. I’ve lived in two completely different places. For the greater part of my life, in Ecuador, and for the last 4 years, in California. Moving away from the place that I spent my entire life at, has really changed me. I had to leave all of the people I love and everyone I ever knew, and move to a strange place where I had no one except my mom, dad, and brother. Moving to California made me become a new person, a different person than who I was in Ecuador. In the following Vignettes I talk about what has made me into who I was in Ecuador, and what made me into what I am today. I talk a lot about the trip to California, and the first few months here because it was a very traumatic experience for me that pains me to think about even to this day. I’ll always miss the person I was in Ecuador, even if I don’t remember who I was. But I will always love the person that I am today and will continue to better myself and live the best life…

"People tell me I am brave. People tell me I am strong. People tell me good job. Well here is the truth of it. I am really not that brave, I am not really that strong, and I am not doing anything spectacular. I am just doing what God called me to do as a follower of Him. Feed His sheep, do unto the least of His people." These words from Katie Davis speak volumes of this young woman's heart for the people of Uganda. In December of 2006, 18 year-old Katie Davis from Brentwood, Tennessee, traveled to Uganda on a missions trip she did when she was on her school's winter break. She was immediately captivated with the people and the culture. Completely impacted and changed, she decided to go to Uganda and follow her heart and passion for the Lord.…

Although there were very few Peruvians in Langley Park at the time, everyone seemed to know about Peruvian culture, specifically about Andean folk magic. The week after my Abuelita arrived in Langley Park she had her first customer. It was a Ecuadorian woman, she was in her early 30s, and she approached my Abuelita while she was at the super market. She begged my grandmother to perform a Limpia and offered to pay for my Abuelita’s groceries, she said she had a job interview in a couple of weeks and wanted a limpia to held her get the job. A limpia is a spiritual cleaning; it is supposed to remove negativity from a person’s spirit and body. For the spiritual aspect, it is believed to get rid of bad luck, curses, and negative spirits attached to you and balance your chakras. Mentally, it is believed to help with addictions and phobias. Physically, it is believed to remove joint pain, and relive you of simple things like constipation and sinuses. You use a regular raw unbroken egg, it can be store-bought, you dip the egg into a glass holy water— if you don't have holy water then Florida water also works or you can say certain prayers over a regular glass of tap water, you can also burn incense if you like, white sage and lavender were my Abuelita’s favorite. You take the egg out of the water once it is room temperature and you begin to “work” the body, which means you rub the egg over…

Growing up in Rwanda one of the smallest and fast emerging nation in Africa has inspired me to take part and be the change that I want to see in my country. Rwanda is under African average of physician per persons, where one physician is accountable to more than ten thousand people and of course that could be a different case in villages where I grew up. I grew up in village near the local hospital, and I could see people going there but never come back alive and many of those were my friends or their parents. I started questioning my ability and wondered what could be the solution, but at that young age I couldn’t find the solution. Later, when I was fifteen years old, that’s when everything become clear when I was in hospital taking care…

I have witnessed many times that someone has demonstrated leadership. Not one is as intriguing as the one I want to share with you today. It was when my mother lived in Mexico when she was 20 years old. When she got married she came to America. She decided to go to New Mexico. That is where she stayed with a couple who had one daughter. They owned a car dealership. My father worked for the husband by washing cars. My mother was a maid at home, taking care of the child as if she was one of hers. She didn't have any children until one day she found out in November. She told the couple that they would be going back to Mexico in December because she was pregnant. As followed she left for Mexico. No one in my family had left for America because…

The swarms of people lined up around the fence at the park, fighting to get free food because they couldn’t afford to feed their children and families. I could go on and on about the things that God allowed me to witness that week, the gang shootings, the single moms fighting to keep their children, the brokenness came in abundance, but so did the healing…God’s healing. When I returned home after that week that I spend in Los Angeles, I knew what I wanted to do for a living. I knew I wanted to empower, educate and advocate for the homeless. I knew that it was time for me to set forth what God has called me to do. I applied at a Non-profit, Consumer Voices Are Born (CVAB), for a Peer Counselor position and was offered the job. I have now been with the organization for three years, and have never experienced a more rewarding place of employment. Every day I am able to see God’s hand in the work that I do. Whether it is to help individuals find housing, gain employment, go back to school to gain an education or a place to volunteer where they are accepted despite the colorful background or barriers they may…

Who would not want to wake up every morning at 7 AM for two weeks in a foreign country and dig a 7ft by 7ft hole during their summer vacation? I, fortunately, had the honor of undertaking this task last summer. Every summer for the last three years, I have traveled to Bogotá, Colombia, to volunteer for a non-profit organization, Children's Vision International, which takes in homeless and needy children. The children are given a home, three meals a day, a chance to go to school, and a chance to have a new beginning away from the horrors of their childhood. While each experience has been priceless and breathtaking, I have never in my life faced a task as arduous and rewarding.…

In September of 2007, I was blessed with the opportunity to fulfill the Great Commission and go into the world and preach the gospel. I went with a team of 15 other missionaries to the flood plain area of the country of Zambia in Africa. This venture was one that changed my life and opened my eyes to a very unique and special group of people. This region of Africa is populated by a people group known as the Lozi. As I traveled the countryside of Zambia with my team and encountered the Lozi, I learned they were a simple people who desperately needed to hear the message of the salvation that comes through Christ. Although they were a modest people, they seemed content in their current situation. None expressed a desire to be an American or live in the land of plenty. Very few of them had anything more than a few changes of clothes, one or two pots for cooking, and some simple tools to work the tiny patch of ground around their hut. They lived…

In February of 2013, my passion for the people of La Cola, Dominican Republic, began. The missions coordinator at my church asked me to lead a group of young adults on a mission trip to a remote, impoverished community in the Dominican Republic. Being only 23 and having never led a mission trip before, I initially felt unprepared for the task; however, she noticed my leadership abilities and my passion for helping people. Somehow, she convinced me to lead the trip. As I prepared my team for the trip, I learned that this rural community had lost over half of its children under the age of five to diseases and malnourishment. Thanks to volunteers’ work over the last decade, the village had initiated sanitation efforts and had made great progress. My excitement to serve these people grew after every meeting, yet I could not yet fathom what kind of impression they would leave on me.…

If I was asked to think of my own future, it’s almost a reflex that I would think of what career I would like, where I want to travel and about the possibilities of having a family. I don’t take into consideration the struggles I might come across throughout. When I’m asked to think of the future of a child in the developing world, careers and travel plans are not what comes to mind. As it is at the minute, every day is a fight for survival for these children, battling poverty, starvation, loneliness, fear and in many cases HIV/AIDS. I want to be positive and focus on the thousands of people working for charities to ease the suffering of these children, but it becomes more and…

Before beginning the long and rewarding process of conducting international outreach, it is crucial to decide what the purpose of the team’s international outreach plan is. Committing to international outreach will become difficult if the sole intention is to receive awards or simply go on a vacation. It is important to understand that conducting international outreach is a multiyear process and is not to be expected to have an immediate impact. When pursuing international outreach, the intent is to give back and make an impact in the world. If these are the true intentions, the hard work will be worth it and it will become more self-rewarding. It will also be easy for others to tell the true meaning behind the project…
