Reflective Essay On Treatment Plan
My first goal was to be able to use basic counseling skills within my counseling sessions at my practicum site and working on learning more about creating appropriate treatment plans on my own. I did quite a bit of reading of educational books, such as treatment planners and also met with both of the Post Docs at my site to learn how they approach treatment planning. I was able to get some good insight on how my approach may differ from others and how that is okay. I learned that in this journey it is very important to know what theoretical orientation you are using to think about the client and how the client will make changes. In order to measure the progress of this goal, I have also worked to develop a better understanding of the intake/ …show more content…
After being able to master some of these steps I had some time to be able to evaluate client outcomes and hope to successfully terminate with some of my clients when they have met their goals. I have also read more about basic counseling skills each week for thirty minutes to an hour. Additionally, as I mentioned before I was able to meet with Post Docs who were working on treatment plans twice during this semester to ensure that I can write a treatment plan more appropriately. Finally, I have been reading treatment planners as needed for my clients to better conceptualize treatment plans for them when updates are needed, but have not needed to update my treatment plans …show more content…
This has increased my comfort as a counselor in training and has also helped me to build the therapeutic alliance with my clients. By having these skills and actively learning more about treatment planning I have become more comfortable with my ability to create appropriate treatment plans now. Additionally, I have been trying to integrate the client-centered approach with other theories/techniques, such as existential and interpersonal process to facilitate my own

Although much research has been conducted on the common factors, qualitative studies on client centered have also been conducted. Gibbard, and Hanley (2005) conducted a five year evaluation of the use of client centered therapy for the treatment of anxiety and depression. A group of individuals receiving client centered therapy were compared to a waitlist group a pre and post assessment were given before the sessions, after 3 years, and after 5 years. I would also try to find out how committed they were to the counseling process and reaching a goal (Wubbolding, 2011). The next step would be to discuss behavioral direction. I would help the client review his or her overall direction by asking questions such as, where do you think you are going if you continue on the same path (Wubbolding, 2011, p.275). The third step in this counseling process is to help the client self-evaluate. Then after the client has self-evaluated then together we would develop a plan. I would probably use accomplish the WDEP procedures by the use of some tonic behaviors such as suspend judgment and establishing boundaries. I think by suspending judgment I can view the clients behaviors from a low level of perception (Wubbolding, 2011). This will help me to better be able to help the client fulfill his or her needs. Then by establishing boundaries it will keep the relationship professional, which will cause less ethical and legal issues. It will also give the client a chance to state which subjects they would rather not talk about.…

Dr. Karin Dumont states similar findings when she advises counselor’s to “individually tailor homework to each client” to reinforce counseling as hard work and to stimulate self-awareness (Liberty University, n.d. p. 18). The methods of practice differ in each situation, but they are similar in preparation. Practitioners must first make an evaluation or assessment of their client. This process take’s patience and practitioners must be able to listen actively to their client with no distractions and without any preconceived notions of what the speaker is saying (Martin, 2007, p. 47). After a practitioner makes a clinical assessment, they can decide on what intervention strategy to use with a client. The Task-Centered Approach is an example of one intervention strategy that a counselor may use. This strategy helps clients who think they are powerless over simple challenges caused by psychosocial problems and allows counselors help define these challenges and set small, agreed upon goals with clients to help them increase self-esteem (Martin, 2007, p. 55). Reframing is another intervention strategy. This strategy helps clients look at the different perspectives of a situation instead of only the negative. Sometimes people hesitate to act on a situation because of the viewpoint that it will always result in a negative outcome. An opposite approach to this strategy would be emotional regulation. Some people do not…

The treatment approach that I have decided to choose is motivational interviewing. Motivational interviewing is a treatment approach that is used in multiple settings for various populations. The main population that motivational interviewing is geared towards is: mental health, substance abuse and chronic conditions such as diabetes. The treatment approach is a method that works on facilitating and engaging intrinsic motivation within the client to make a positive change in their behavior. Motivational interviewing is goal oriented, client centered, non-judgmental and non-confrontational for the client. Motivation interviewing can be used by a therapist, but they must be able to demonstrate these four key skills: ability to ask open ended…
