Reflective Essay On What I Learned In My Writing Class
During this semester I have learned multiple things in English 100. Learning different formatting styles, grammar, annotation styles, along with editing and revising drafts has helped me grow as a writer. I have gained new knowledge along with skills such as references, writing in MLA format, which I never knew before. I have learned new things while receiving comments from the instructor on my essays. Most of them did not have much detail and needed more.
I learned that detail is key to writing, so that readers can get a clear and full understanding of the point that you are trying to argue, or make. One example is the literacy narrative. I wrote an essay that was off topic with little detail. I learned from the instructor through comments that Literacy was not what I thought it to be, or what I was writing about. It didn’t explain how I learned something or what I learned. Therefore I wrote a new essay on moral and respect. These were things I learned in the military and as long as I had all the details about the events happening in the essay I was, finally understanding. Learning annotation styles have helped also. Using different styles allowed me to generate certain paragraphs and help with my resource

I have learned how to be more persistent and not give up so easily. I had a problem with this before knowing about the 8 Habits of mind. I am now capable of staying on top of things. Finishing my essays in a timely matter was a major achievement for me. I stuck to it and because of that I gained knowledge for every mistake I made on them. I also believe that openness and creativity from the 8 Habits of Mind will help with my future writing. I think that I will be able to structure my essays better and give more that I have this semester. Knowing all these new things that I never learned or had knowledge of will help me become a better

The following are three essays that I worked on during the semester. Most of it remains the same, while some of my ideas have developed. The only major changes made were redirecting the ideas in the Where is Waldo Now essay. In English 1102 I struggled with a lot, Professor Grant really challenged what I thought I knew about writing. Being that English is my second language, language barriers normally do not reflect in my speech or writing. I felt that this semester really showed me that I still had work to do. Passive voice, comma slices, forming arguments, and grammar are some of the many skills that I worked on during this semester. I attended the Writing Center as often as I could; I also asked questions during office hours. I worked on perfecting these skills in my other classes as well by reading out loud. By exploring these different options my essay grades improved 15 points. Hopefully my portfolio and future papers reflects the time and practice I’ve put into my writing.…

I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. Initially, I read the first paper I wrote for the Quarter 1 Writing Assessment and I noticed that I didn’t follow the directions completely. As I read on, there were many simple sentences and not many transitional words.…

When one masters a certain practice, one becomes confident and nearly perfects the practice either because one had guidance or practiced continuously. I have not put myself in either one of those situations. To be honest, I write ‘put myself’ because I believe I had the choice of removing myself from classrooms to another better one; and the choice of being able to discipline myself to practice writing continuously.…

I now have a more efficient system of planning and write multiple drafts before I feel at ease with submitting an assignment. Not only that, I now feel confident when writing papers and am able to complete assignments with little or no writers block. Although, writing in college has not been the easiest. It took me a while to transition to this level of writing and took a lot of hard work to get to where I am at now. Sometimes, I find myself over reviewing an assignment before I actually turn it in. Not that this is bad, but at times it takes me longer to submit an assignment than it…

Arguably the most important skill that I have learned is that it is essential to plan my essays. Prior to this class, I would just write all of my thoughts down without creating an outline. After that, I would just briefly proofread my essay and that was my final copy. Now, I make sure I spend a decent amount of time on an outline and make it incredibly detailed so that my thoughts are all in line with each other and overall, the essay makes sense. Then, I will read over my rough draft multiple times and have other people proofread it as well, just to make sure that it makes sense and is as clear as it can be. My papers went from taking less than an hour to write to taking 2 or 3 hours at the least.…

Throughout my writing experience I have always struggled with my body paragraphs. I tend to always have a strong introduction but once I began to go into my first body paragraph I lose my train of thought. One of my main issues is that I get to wordy. Which then leaves me with fragments. Lastly, which I’m sure most people have an issue with is basic grammar errors such as, spelling and placing commas. I feel that my writing has had a small progression. Through this class I have learned more writing techniques that have helped me as a writer.…

Throughout this semester I have received a lot of input and criticism on my essays from my TA, my professor and fellow students. This semester I was fortunate to receive quick, fairly reliable, built in feedback. From the feedback that I have received by taking this class I believe that I have become a better writer as it was beneficial for the most part. Feedback that I received from my fellow students was occasionally helpful. It typically varied from week to week. One week I would write a paper and get a ton of markings and criticism on it which was helpful because I was able to see what I did wrong and I would rarely have to get it proof read another time. Other times I would turn in a paper and it would come back with few markings and comments. This felt almost like a waste of time because I knew that I had more mistakes that I did not catch earlier. Because of this I would have to go out of my way and someone else would have to go out of their way to get it proof read again, or I would risk handing in the good copy with mistakes. One thing that I appreciated from peer evaluation days was that was able to see what worked in my paper, what did not and what I need to improve on.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…

Writing is definitely not my favorite task, but I don’t hate it either. I would say that I am indifferent towards writing. However, writing is a skill that needs to be honed and mastered, because it plays such a key role in almost any career. So when I started working in the lab I was a little apprehensive, because I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. But through my work in the lab I have observed so many different levels of students and how that plays a role in their writing and style; I have even learned some facts about the way I write that I was not aware of. I have learned that I am not very confident in my own writing skills, and I need to work on my writer’s voice.…
