Reflective Essay: What I Learned At College

Back in 2006 I felt really disappointed when I accepted the fact that I wasn’t going anywhere outside my country after finishing High School. I had tried my best to score well on my SAT and on my grades, along with several extracurricular activities to build up a personal profile that would be good enough to enter an American University. But things did not work out back then. My family was struck by an inconvenient event, and I was forced to make a last minute decision to stay.
I felt devastated. I did not understand at the moment, out of all those years I had prepared, the hard work and sacrifice… Why had my parents gotten ill just when I was about to leave? I was selfish back then. However, it is by looking back in time that I was able to understand, and be grateful, for the way everything went through.

Though the initiative gave a new boost and oxygen to my family business, maintaining and expanding the business are among some of my professional goals I have set myself in life. The experience I gained at work and the lessons learned at college has helped me and my family overcome several obstacles. But deep inside me I have this little something that’s bothering me, that’s telling me that I can do more and accomplish more in life.
At Dell I met some of the most influential leaders in my life. People that lead by example and inspired with their counsel and actions. Their motivation, ethics, culture, work environment and the sense of meritocracy was a real life changing experience for me. It was there that I convinced myself that someday, somehow, I would try again to pursue my goal of studying at an American University, since most of the initial team that came to open the site for El Salvador were in fact, Americans.
