Reflective Essay: A Career In College
As a child, I always admired and respected men and women who served the United States in the Navy and armed forces. These positions required a lot of sacrifice which meant that only the strongest willed of them made it through. That will power seemed to distinguish them from other members of society, they were mentally and physically stronger. When it came time for me to look into applying for colleges, I looked for places that had good engineering programs, top tier educations, and a structured student campus life. Many universities had the former two requirements, however, very few had the latter requirement. While discussing college options with my computer engineering teacher, he recommended I look into the United States Naval Academy …show more content…
Folding laundry or doing dishes caused her to be out of breath and this continued to get worse throughout the year. In 2012 we were finally able to get her to a doctor where they couldn’t even examine her trachea with a tiny camera because it was so blocked. She was instantly taken to the emergency room where they diagnosed her with subglottic tracheal stenosis. In the following years she had to endure a tracheotomy and nine surgeries that attempted to remove scar tissue and open her trachea. The recovery time for these surgeries was very extensive which meant that I had to care for the home and my mother while my father worked. I feel that this period of my life was when my character developed the most making me mentally stronger, caring, responsible, and eager to make the most of my life. Joining that Naval Academy would allow me to do just that, giving me an unlimited number of options to choose in order to succeed in life and make a difference. With the structure and expertise of the Navy, I could enhance my knowledge to an extent I never thought possible, as well as physically train to reach and surpass the Navy’s physical fitness standards. The Naval Academy has some of the highest standards for it’s students in the world and I know that I will achieve nothing short of perfection. I am willing to commit my life to the Navy and put every ounce of effort I have into

Throughout my four years of high school, I have consistently pushed myself beyond my limits and comfort zones in attempt to discover my place in the world. I spent most of first two years discovering who I was as an individual, ultimately manifesting into inspiration for success. I grew out of “fitting in” and decided to turn my life and aspirations towards a greater direction; on this road of discovery, I separated myself from those who valued arrogance and indifference. “Nerd Squad” is what I am a part of today, which is why I am currently confident enough to apply for the National Honors Society Scholarship. I believe I have grown into a tenacious, sympathetic, and joyous young man that the entire school has seen develop, and I am honored…

The Armed Forces is something my family is quite familiar with and has been an influential part of my life as a structure of leadership. My dad has told me a multitude of things he has experienced while in the Army and the opportunities given at hand when he was enlisted. I have also heard praises from many family members and family friends to the loved ones that have taken another step ahead by enrolling into college, and enhancing their leadership skills to become well renowned officers of the military. I will be taking this same road of success, but pushing it another level by applying for the NROTC, which will train my mind and body to guide others when I am commissioned into the Marine Corps.…

The important pursuit of financial success is an idea that has been drilled into my head by the adults in my life from early on; my parents struggled in life, and for me they wanted a better, easier, future for me. What I took away from this was that I would not be successful and happy without the money and credentials as well. I could not understand why so many of my classmates wanted to be writers and artists; didn't they too want to be successful? However, the summer before my senior year, I had an idea that would change my thought process forever: a visit to the gateway of success, the Naval Academy.…

As schools become increasing diverse, cultural competence is essential. Thus, school counselors must have awareness, knowledge, and skills to help the needs of the Asian student population seek higher education. As a minority, I believe that multicultural counseling can greatly impact the lives of students. During my high school years, I felt unaccepted and not understood by my assigned high school counselor because she wasn’t cultural competence. Because my assigned high school counselor couldn’t understand why I chose to apply to only one university, Fresno State, I wasn’t able to go to her when I had questions about college. What she couldn’t understand was that although I wanted to earn an education for myself, I also wanted to stay in Fresno to help financially support my parents. Tatman (2004) states, “Counselors must acknowledge the value that the Hmong place on the family and community and the importance this value plays in all aspects of their lives”.…

I tend to always have a strong introduction but once I began to go into my first body paragraph I lose my train of thought. One of my main issues is that I get to wordy. Which then leaves me with fragments. Lastly, which I’m sure most people have an issue with is basic grammar errors such as, spelling and placing commas. I feel that my writing has had a small progression. Through this class I have learned more writing techniques that have helped me as a writer.…

In order to have a successful journey through college one must prepare extensively beforehand. I learned this concept after my parents told tales about what they wished they had done during high school to prepare for college. In order to lay the groundwork for my future education, I enrolled in advanced dual credit courses, took many significant tests, researched college campuses that I was interested in, and also filled out numerous applications. Together, the aforementioned steps set me up for an easy acceptance when the time arrived.…

Being pulled cross country, having to leave behind friends and family, and even pets, I learned what it meant to take hardship and turn it into important life skills. Living in new cities every few years, I learned how to adapt to different cultures and people and not just interact but to create relationships. I learned to turn my anger and frustration, at leaving yet another place I called home, to determination to make my next home better than the last. When I came to college and found myself with a 1.7 GPA, lost and behind, I didn’t give up but rather focused my energy to improving myself and building my GPA back up to a 3.0 going into my senior year. My perseverance is my greatest asset in life and what will make me a great asset to this University. I think Will Smith said it best when he said “You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me, you might be sexier than me, you might be all of those things . . . But if we get on the treadmill together, there's two things: You're getting off first, or I'm going to die. . .…
