Crooks is isolated because of color and his disability. He is physically divided from his fellow co workers and lives in a separate bunkhouse. His loneliness forces him to acquiesce when Lennie tries to make a decent conversation with him. But when Lennie fills Crooks in about the dream farm place, all he does is laughs. It could be because he saw too many men say that but they end up working for someone or just simply ended up in ditch. Crooks is understandably cynical and shows apprehension about how others treat him in return. He cannot see beyond the preconception he has always encountered in the past. Ways that Crooks copes with his seclusion is by reading books. The other guys can't read but he can which gives him a huge advantage of…

“Surrrr-sure.” Evelyn slurred stumbling once more. Sebastian lifted her up like she was a feather and pulled her close to him; his white t-shirt smelled of eucalyptus and lavender, the scent soothed her. They slowly walked down a small dimly lit path, the crickets ceased as they passed. “So tell me… Why did your family move to Whale Cove?”…

Dear students of first year college English, also known here at El Camino as English 1A, it is time to learn how to argue in your work. Not just any arguments though, you must learn to place logical, ethical, and sometimes even emotional points in your papers. The most important technique to learn at this time in your education would be the use of logos in your essays. Logos is logic based arguments in written word or media and can seriously help you in supporting your claims. When you use logic in your papers you are using the cold hard the facts, the things that people struggle to deny are true or just inherently understand as right.…

The only way to get better at certain things is by doing them over and over. I feel as this applies to writing. In writing workshop we wrote a lot. So obviously I think that I became a better writer. Mainly because this semester I wrote as much essays as I did my freshman and sophomore year. During this class I changed some of my ways of writing because I didn’t like how it was. It also helped me see my strong and weak spots in writing. I can leave this class with tips for other students and with things that help me write better. This class is writing workshop and I will leave this class with more writing skill than I had in the beginning of the year.…

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts,” this is an inspirational quote by Winston Churchill, which can lead as an example to all the students in the United States that have dropped out of high school. According to dosomething.org, the U.S, which had some of the highest graduation rates of any developed country, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries. Stress, low self-esteem, and poor support from family members are all responsible for leading students to dropping out of high school. However, the United States have been improving in that area and they’ve been efficiently, increasing the number of students that earn a high school diploma. Ultimately, the amount of students that have dropped…

I am determined to go to college even if there are some setbacks that make harder for me to do so. For example, when I was in 10th grade I found out that I had scoliosis, and the only way that I would be able to treat it was through surgery. At the time that I had found this out, I had already planned out my sophomore year; I was going to take 2 AP classes and 2 math courses above my grade level. At the time I truly believed that I was going to be able to go through the surgery, take all my classes, and very least get decent grades in all my classes, including my AP classes. However, that semester ended up being my worst.…

One of the biggest and most controversial immigration laws that has been passed ever is the brand new Arizona Immigration Law SB1070. It is the new law makes it “a state crime — a misdemeanor — to not carry immigration papers” (NYTimes). It also makes it legal for police to ask citizens for their papers if they reasonably suspect that they may be illegal immigrants. If the person does not have any paperwork and is illegal they will get deported but if they are legal then they just get fined and for their crime. This is one of the most controversial immigration laws that have been passed in decades and it seems as if America is split down the middle with this new law.…

I have learned much in my 11 years in California public school. I learned to write in cursive; I learned my times tables; I learned the equation for a line, and I learned a thing or two about Shakespeare. However, the most important thing I learned is that is that the Common Core doesn’t work. The Common Core Standards Initiative is an approach to keep all American students on the same page. The problem is that it keeps all of us on page 1. In my AP Calculus BC class, my 13 classmates and I are piloting a Common Core textbook. At first, everyone was excited to try something new, but now we groan at the sight of the textbook. While I passed the AP test for the first year of Calculus, it has been a challenge “reviewing” these concepts in the new style. Why change a system that was proven to be successful? California, one of the last states to implement Common Core, actually made a change for the worse. Therefore, I strongly believe that the 28th amendment to the Constitution should be the nationwide abolishment of Common Core.…

I am contacting you today to see if there is anything you can do about my grade in accounting 203. I am not sure you are aware of this but my father passed away a few weeks ago while I was in the course and I had to miss a week and a half of class. Before his passing I was doing well in the course and I received a 89 on the first exam, but after his passing and missing class and dealing with his estate my final was a 50 and I looked on banner and saw I received a 76 for the course. I am not saying I did not earn a C in the class because I did take the exams, but my mind was not mentally there is there any way I can do something to get my grade to a b-. I did email my professor but she did not email me back. There might be nothing you can do…

I have decided to write you wishing to persuade you into supporting my education. As I’m sure you are aware, I am student who genuinely cares about school. I sit here looking out at our farm and realizing it’s almost graduation. I am caught up in emotion wondering what it will be like to move on and experience life somewhere else and just as I am about to start filling out college applications my grandpa drives by on his mule. The emotion of time moving forward and his appearance has caused me to reflect upon the many summer vacations that he I had together. We traveled to Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Minnesota, and lots of different places in Arkansas. We’ve been camping, canoeing, horseback riding, sightseeing, and just visiting relatives. We have spent many hours together in a vehicle and in a canoe. He has shaped my outlook on life and has always tried to teach me about our family history even though he might have exaggerated a bit. My most memorable canoe trip was also our last canoe trip.…

Our class always starts at 8.15, but students are usually much earlier in the school talking and playing with friends. First subject is English. Everyone is prepared of this lesson, because Ms.Byun suddenly gives essay for HW and you never know who will be next, after first lesson finishes. Then we go to another lesson World History, which is one of the bored subjects. I go to sleep after 10mins of lecture. But sometimes he teaches the lessons with passion, making them really interesting. The third lesson is English. The teachers name is Mr.Bausili. He is a very interesting teacher, with good experience, but the best thing about him is, he is very funny, and every student just relaxes in his class. Then the fourth lesson is French. It is kind of interesting class. Because, learning new foreign language is kind of cool. After this class I have Geometry. It is a really interesting subject too. I got to know more about angles and postulates and my teacher teaches us so well and make the subject look interesting. Then I have lunch. After all the hard-works, lunch is kind of a refresher for me. I have lunch and play soccer with my friends. The sixth lesson is Algebra. My teacher is Ms. Daniels. She is one of my favorite teachers just like Ms.Byun. She has the creativeness, that how to Interest students. We have fun and do Algebra in her class. After Algebra I have Biology. I have a young teacher for Biology. Her name is Ms.Koo. She is a good teacher and explains us very well, though I have a poor grade in her class, but I try my best and she supports me very well. Then I have Mr.Grath for gym. After having 8 periods, he gives 10mins for relax and after that we have to jog for 5mins then go through our basketball course. Probably after 20mins of playing basketball, the bell rings and hearing the bell ring is like the best moment in the entire day. I go to my locker, have soda, put my binders from the locker and head my way to the…
