There are many kinds of concerts that feature all sorts of different music styles. Country, for example, is known to be more popular in the south. This shows regionalism because people who grew up in the South are likely more knowledgable to country music versus people who were raised elsewhere. “A Wagner Matinee” by Willa Cather, has many aspects that show regionalism.
A young man, Clark, who lives in Boston, presents himself well and is very polite and proper. He is almost shocked and ashamed when he sees his Aunt for the first time in years. Aunt Georgina, who lives in Nebraska, is very dirty and doesn’t present herself as someone in Boston would. These descriptions are a very clear aspect of regionalism because it shows how living in a different region changes one’s lifestyle. When Aunt Georgina comes to Boston, it is apparent that she is dull. From living on the farm and farming for so many years, she is worn out. People who live in Boston are less likely to do such hard manual labor, so they are more lively and energetic. These aspects show regionalism because if Aunt Georgina would have stayed in Boston, she would have more energy and wouldn’t be so dull, but by choosing the farm life, she is the complete opposite. Toward the end of the story, Aunt Georgina begins to remember her previous life in Boston. She is faced wthe hard truth that she has to go back to Nebraska, although she realizes she truly belongs back in Boston. Her reaction shows regionalism because after living in Nebraska for so long, being in Boston for such a short period of time brings back all her memories and who she once was.
Throughout the short story, Aunt Georgina obviously misses her old life in Boston and has completely changed as a person. All of these aspects in “A Wagner Matinee” show regionalism by proving that even though one has changed as a person from being in a different area, memories that have been made will always be there.
