There are several studies that show data on how bachelor educated nurses have more critical thinking skills and better communication and management abilities than an associate’s degree level
nurse. As Goodman states in her article, “improved patient outcomes correlate with higher levels of nursing education” (Goodman, 2015). To encourage nurses to gain a higher education, Goodman states the importance of creating standards to programs, such as the RN to BSN program, so all schools have the same focus or curriculum (Goodman, 2015). Not only are bachelor’s prepared nurses more proficient in critical thinking and management skills but they have potential for greater opportunities to hold higher positions (Goodman, 2015).
A bachelor’s degree in nursing shows understanding of people in an entire population to improve overall health. Using skills learned, nurses can recognize how “care mapping for communities is very important” and combined with a “thorough assessment” can prevent some community illnesses (Wittman-Price, Thompson, Sutton, Ritts, 2012). For example, the authors of this text go into detail of several factors that can affect any community or population such as obesity (Wittman-Price, Thompson, Sutton, Ritts, 2012). Nurses with higher educations can improve outcomes by developing plans of care to prevent these issues by teaching “optimal heart rates” or establishing nutritional goals (Wittman-Price, Thompson, Sutton, Ritts, 2012).
It was said in a web article that for patients to receive the best clinical outcomes, “a standardized educational preparation of RNs at the BSN level is essential” (Zittel, Moss, O’Sullivan, & Terry, 2016). The baccalaureate essentials project compares the classes required in the RN to BSN program with the nine baccalaureate essentials. Educational requirements at most acute care settings will require a BSN level education within a certain time frame which motivates nurses to reach for higher goals (Zittel, Moss, O’Sullivan, & Terry, 2016).
