Associate Degree Vs. Baccalaureate Degree Nurse Competency Differences
Although graduates of entry level nursing programs sit for the same NCLEX-RN licensing examination and pass it at the same rate (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], n.d.), nursing competencies are different among associate degree prepared versus baccalaureate degree prepared nurses. The baccalaureate prepared nurse learns leadership skills, community health, and more in depth into nursing theories.
Because the baccalaureate prepared nurse learns leadership skills, he or she is better prepared to make assignments according to patient acuity. According to the AACN (n.d., para. 11) in a study released in the Journal of Nursing Administration “every 10% increase in the proportion of BSN nurses on the hospital staff was associated with a 4% decrease in the risk of death.” The baccalaureate prepared nurse is prepared to take leadership roles in organizational committees. The associate degree prepared nurse is more technical, and the baccalaureate degree prepared nurse is more professional (Giger & Davidhizar, 1990, p. 1013). The baccalaureate degree prepared nurse receives education in leadership skills, community health, and in depth critical thinking using nursing theories and conceptual framework.
