Rehab nursing

Rehab Nursing Nursing is a field that has many different types of areas to practice in. One of those areas is in a rehabilitation unit. In a rehab unit a nurse helps a patient recover from any type of surgery or specific disease. A nurse aids the patient in the goal of independence in their ADL’s. Rehab nursing is helping a patient adapt to their disabilities and work towards independence and achieve their maximum potential, despite their physical disability or illness. A nurse has a holistic approach with the patient and focuses on also including the family in the recovery of the patient. A nurse also provides support through the different programs, such as family education, therapy and any referrals needed. The rehab unit is different from other types of nursing because it empowers the patient to become independent and continue living in society and return to their normal lives. A rehab unit is a collaborative unit because different specialties come together for the purpose of caring for the optimal well being of patients. In order for a nurse to work in a rehab unit he/she would need to attain a CRRN (certified rehabilitation registered nurse) certificate which validates a professional standing as an experienced rehabilitation nurse with the level of knowledge of the specialized area. It sets the nurse apart from colleagues that are not certified by demonstrating an achievable symbol of professional development and recognition. The CRRN credential requires nurses to have experience in rehabilitation nursing and pass an exam validating a documented level of knowledge of rehabilitation nursing practice. A rehab nurse must be able to motivate patients by setting incremental goals and helping them to reach them. The rehab process can be a long and painful process for patients, and they often need emotional support as well as medical guidance.
