Thomas and Eliza understand each other in that they don’t judge each other for their differences. Thomas ignores the fact that Eliza has a leather leg and not all of her fingers and Eliza plays along with Thomas “That’s because people flush them down the toilet when they go on holidays” is what Eliza told Thomas when he said, “There are tropical fish swimming in the canal”. This shows that Eliza and Thomas understand
each other.
Thomas writes a letter to Eliza telling her how he feels once he gains the confidence to. This shows Thomas appreciates Eliza and wants her to realise that just because she has a leather leg and not all of her fingers that she isn’t beautiful. It’s extremely thoughtful of Thomas because Eliza may or has been bullied throughout her life and this letter would have let her know that there are people out there who are genuine and nice. In the letter, Thomas writes “Maybe you think you aren’t beautiful because you have a leather leg that creaks when you walk. Or because one of your hands has only a little finger and nothing else. But that’s not true. You are the most beautiful girl in the world.”
Eliza and Thomas obviously have a strong relationship or else Jesus wouldn’t have told the angels they had no chance with Thomas “because they don’t have a leather leg.” This shows that even Jesus realises they are meant to be even though they have a 7 year age gap. I think Eliza will wait for Thomas to grow up so they can be together because they both care about each other too much to just let go. At the read-aloud club, they share glances and their moods uplift when they talk. Thomas helps Eliza to her seat and laughs throughout the session with her.
Thomas and Eliza are understanding towards each other; Eliza pretends that she can see what Thomas sees and Thomas ignores the fact that Eliza has a leather leg. Through this relationship, we saw Thomas gain courage and we learned that age doesn’t matter when it comes to love and friendship.
