that they learned the true value of respecting their elders even though they are cranky and mean sometimes (Lee, 1960). In the novel “The Kite Runner”, Amir’s relationship with his father in America is what truly made him prosper into becoming an adult. During their stay in America, Amir’s father was very supportive of Amir, despite of him being not the man that his father always wanted him to be. Baba showed supportiveness to Amir when he graduated college and celebrated with him on a restaurant and giving him a car (Hosseini,2003). Another foundation of maturing and developing into an adult is experiences.
In each novel, it shows that experiences from characters have contributed to their development and maturity of a character. In the novel “To Kill a Mocking Bird”, An example of learning through experiences is when Scout was saved by Boo Radley from Bob Ewell (Lee, 1960). She noticed that Boo Radley was not like any of the rumours were meant to be, and learned that every rumours that was said to him was fake. She also learned to empathize, such as like Boo Radley, when she tried to think how Boo Radley view the world (Lee, 1960). In the novel “The Kite Runner”, Amir’s past experiences have made him developed into the man that his father has always wants him to be. Amir’s failures of the past with his friend, has made him to do the right things and be good again by venturing to Afghanistan and finding Hassan’s son
(Hosseini,2003). The last foundation of maturing and developing into an adult is facing obstacles. In each novel, characters face different types of obstacles that has develop them in some way. In the novel “To Kill a Mocking Bird”, Scout and Jem learned how to become tolerant to people, when his father was taking the Tom Robinon’s case. Both Jem and Scout faced a ton of filthy comments about their father and they would use to be affected by it tremendously but through tolerance they are able to endure it. In the novel “The Kite Runner”, the obstacles faced by Amir during his journey to Afghanistan have developed him in a good way. An example is when he made the decision to go against Assef in order to save Sohrab (Hosseini,2003). This situation made him braver than he was been in the previous chapters, and has made himself the man that his father has always wants him to be. The importance of relationships, experiences, and obstacles have a big impact when maturing and developing into an adult. These foundations are so important for development of adulthood and without it it is really impossible to become a functional adult in society, if nothing will ever guide people through life, whether by experiences, relationships, or obstacles that has been faced.
