Relief camps were a National Disaster because they were formed to provide unemployed men with Relief to those who needed it, this plan ended badly. The relief camps were formed to provide those unemployed men with a job, shelter and food and water. The camps was started by the Government on October 1st 1932 and ended on June 1st 1936, they took place over a series of 4 years all over Canada. I will discuss the working conditions and the horrible pay the workers received, how cruel the workers were treated and finally the dreadful conditions and illnesses the camp itself contained.

To be admitted into a relief camp you would have to have so many things such as ; you would have to be single, male, unemployed, not living at home, at least 18 years of age and not a political agitator. The Government would provide free transportation to the camp itself. If you sign up for a relief a relief camp you will receive a set of work clothes, soap and towel ,a bunk bed, three unhealthy and low calorie meals a day, and complete use of the crude an unsanitary showers, toilets and laundry facilities. Advertisement for the camps made them seem way better than th=ey actually were. When the workers got out to the camp they soon found the dreadful horror that awaited them.
The relief camps were also a national disaster because of the way the workers were treated and how they were put to work. Most camps would put their workers to work 44 hours a week including 4 hours each day on weekends. The pay for these poor souls was only 20 cents a day plus 1.3 cents for tobacco to smoke. No committees of the camp workers may be formed for union purposes. Any complaints would have to go to the camp foreman individually; this is because one doesn’t look as strong as many.
