Religious and Ethnic Diversity

I have chosen to write the religious part of this paper on the Roman Catholic religion. The Roman Catholic religion differs from other religions in many ways. The Church teaches that it is the one true Church divinely founded by Jesus Christ. They differ from a Christen religion even though they worship the same God. They have unique beliefs, practices, and traditions that set them apart from other Christians. Over the course of the centuries there has been many quarrels and hostilities between Catholics/Christians and Muslims. In the 1500’s the Roman Catholic Church did not tolerate any deviance from its teachings because they did not want to show a sign of weakness. The Roman Catholic religion has contributed a lot to the American culture. About 24 percent of Americans identify themselves as Catholic, making Catholicism the largest Christian denomination in America. One of the biggest religions we have here in our Country. Catholics faced a lot of discrimination and prejudice when they were first being introduced into the United States. Some states even tried to banning Catholicism. Even though the first amendment of the constitution granted freedom of religion a lot of Americans did not accept Catholic newcomers.

From my research I have learned a lot about the catholic religion. It helped me to get to understand it a little more in the sense of now I know that they are part of the Christian religion. I also did not know all the hardships that the Catholics had to go through when they were bringing the religion to the US. It also made me realize that every new religion that people bring into the country will see discrimination. I think that it is because it is new to people and people are afraid of change and new things.

The ethnic/racial group I am writing about is African American’s. African American differs from other racial

This is mainly because of the many advances and acts of individual Catholics over time. One leader who was particularly well known for doing these things was the 35th President of the United States. John F. Kennedy has, and continues to have, a profound effect on how American society views Catholicism and its ideals. John F. Kennedy shaped the acceptance of Catholicism into the American…

Religion can be defined in simple terms as a fundamental set of beliefs and values in regards to the creation of the universe and the powers that are responsible for such creation, usually involving one or many deities. While there are numerous religions recognized throughout the world and society, there are basic components of all religious traditions. According to Molloy (2010), scholars agree that most religions manifest themselves with 8 common elements: belief system, community, central myths, ritual, ethics, characteristic emotional experiences, material expressions, and sacredness.…

They are discriminated against in very different ways. For example, the long beard and long ringlet curls in the men’s hair in the Amish community, this is normal for them and if for some reason you don’t or can’t grow it or it gets cut off you are likely to be shunned by the whole community until it all grows back. Most people in society today like the short hair and clean shaven face but with the Amish it quite the opposite. So, therefore they are judged and made fun of, called names, etc. With Hinduism, it’s just the opposite the men shave their heads and wear only robe type clothing. Because they look different they are judged and assumed to be “different”.…

To begin my personal informative essay on diversity in the United States, I would like to point out what information has had the most influence on how I better understand and relate to others different from how I did in the past. I do not feel as though this class taught me any more than I already know about other races and ethnicities, in terms of, how their ancestors came to America, or what hardships particular racial or ethnical groups have grown through in the group’s history in the United States. What I do feel like this class has done for me is, put into prospective of how often and frequent prejudice and discrimination is still today.…
