Kempe has numerous visions with religious figures she has mentioned in her book to show her connection with grace. She tells her husband and family of the visions she has with religious figures such as Christ and Mary. For example, she has a vision of a man(Christ) telling her "Daughter, why have you forsaken me, and I never forsook you?” She says how she had a vision of how she were to be abstinent, wear white and fast. However, it is clear that visions are close to impossible. Therefore there is a strong possibility that she was mentally challenged, for example, a schizophrenic. She was always surrounded by religion and her vision incorporated different biblical stories she heard at church or images she saw of church relations. This could explain her visions always relating to what she was always surrounded around. Another possibility is she knew her visions were false, however she was using it as a way to show she had a strong connection to the divine.
