I. Thesis: At the end of the passage “Everything and Nothing” by Borge there is a story about Shakespeare meeting God. Shakespeare says, “I, who have been so many men in vain, want to be one man: myself.” A person who spends most of their life deceiving or manipulating people may become a fantastic actor, able to play any role that they can think of and able to make people do whatever they desire and always believe them. However, in the end, they will ultimately become unhappy, as they realize that along the way to achieving their goals, they have left their true selves behind. They become a husk of a person and are no longer able to feed their desires or needs. Prospero and King Richard are characters who are considered by many to be master actors or manipulators who both have various goals that they wish to do. But as Borges said, one who becomes to wrapped up in their lies and act can lose themselves. These two characters represent both outcomes of this situation. They represent what happens when you remember yourself and stop the act before it is too late, and what happens when you forego your own self and lose yourself to the play.
