There are several leadership styles represented in the film “Hoosiers.” This movie brings two different concepts called transactional leadership and transformational leadership. Transactional leadership styles are more concerned with maintaining the normal flow of operations, whereas a transformational leader goes beyond managing the daily tasks for leading their followers to success. Transactional leadership styles also include trying to establish direction, aligning people, they are dedicated to communication, creating teams, motivation and inspiration. A transformational leadership styles basically turn towards to creating the agenda and requests, they are dedicated to planning, policies and procedures. Referent power is the type of power that I use the most, because I usually gain power that is gained as a result of being admired by subordinates in the workplace. I like this type of power better in the workplace, because it is developed by trust from your employees. When I was a team leader I used this type of form of power it worked very well, because people felt a part of what was being done, that their opinions matter, and they showed respect to me as well. Referent power is hard to gain because you have to prove to other as a leader that you’re not just looking out for your interest you’re also looking out for theirs as well. The term power can be defined different ways but our text, Organizational Behavior (2012), maintains that “power is the ability to influence the behaviors of others using formal and informal means” (Baack, 2012). Power does not necessarily have to equate with results; a powerful person can lead an organization or offer their opinion to others who, based on the speaker/leaders inherent power, will respond accordingly. Power also describes “any ability to do something, including abilities of non-human agents. So we speak of the ‘power of an engine or a machine’, the ‘power of speech’ or ‘the power of the West’” (Hamilton, 2013). The primary distinction between power and domination is that one person or group has the power to do something versus the power over something or someone else. Oftentimes, leaders such as managers or organizational heads, take the power of their position and further it to that of a dominator who commands their subordinates, offers ultimatums, and manages in an autocratic sometimes tyrannical manner. Power and domination can work concurrently if balance is employed. A leader can take the power of their position to agreeably get subordinates to perform in a specific manner – the balancing act is exercising both power and domination in a way that isn’t abrasive, by figuring out a way to make employees or subordinates feel involved in the decision-making and action processes.…

In week four we took a look at power and leadership, here we contrasted the two. Power is the influence someone has over another person and leadership uses power to attain goals. It is important that one does not have to be a leader to have power. Many people have the power to coerce others without having the leadership role. We could relate to formal power and compare it to the workplace. We use the different formal powers; coercive, reward, and legitimate powers every day. When our employees fail to comply with company goals they can get written up which could result in termination. We also use rewards for employees who exceed goals. In the movie "Remember the Titans," there were major racial difficulties between black and white students. This was during a time when the school had just been integrated to allow blacks into the school and the high school football team. These challenges helped the Titans grow as a team and made them more co-operative and successful. The difficulties of a multiracial team were overcome with the assistance of democratic and authoritarian coaching styles, motivational skills, self-fulfilling prophecy, and the perception of the athletes and coaches. Because of these actions, the Titans were able to defeat the challenges they were faced with as a team and come out superior.…
Boone and Yoast are the two main coaches in Remember the Titans. Boone is the new african-american coach and his coaching style is a firm, aggressive one, with high expectations and tough way of reaching these expectations. He is often seen yelling at his players, but never in a way that could be seen as detrimental. Coach Yoast on the other hand uses positive reinforcement to make a better team. He is never seen yelling, is more subtle in his intentions, and although he too has the same high expectations like Boone, he is softer in his ways.…

The civil unrest that occurred during the 1960’s and 1970’s is hard to imagine. For people that didn’t experience the civil rights movement, that time period is only known through movie and book images. Remember The Titans is an American film based on true events starring Denzel Washington, Will Patten, and Wood Harris. The movie takes place in the 1970’s in suburban Virginia. One of the main focuses of the film is on the integration of whites and blacks into one school and one football team. The film is very accurate in its history. Although a few details are inaccurate, such as the year the school was integrated, the director, Boaz Yakin, did a great job keeping the facts straight.…
Remember the Titans was based on a true story. Back in 1971, the high schools in Alexandria, Virginia were forced to integrate an all-black and all-white school into T.C. Williams High School. A young black coach, Herman Boone who was new to the community was then hired to replace Bill Yoast, as the head coach of that school. At first Coach Yoast wanted to pursue his opportunities elsewhere, but in the end he changed his mind and stayed to be Coach Boone’s assistant after his students vowed to sit out the season unless he coaches. At the school’s training camp, tension built between the white and black players. But with Coach Boone’s guidance, the team comes together, and slowly unites the whole community. The five bases of power are divided into two groups; formal power and personal power, and further subdivided into five specific categories under each group. Categories of formal power are coercive power, reward power, and legitimate power, and they come from the authority of one person over another. Categories of personal power are expert power and referent power, and they come from one’s characteristics rather than one’s authority. “Coercive power base depends on fear of the negative results from failing to comply.” (Judge and Robbins, 2012) It is the most conspicuous form of power from the people’s perspective. Fear of negative results can lead to dissatisfaction and resentment, and it is usually the least effective power. People will acquiesce to coercive power to avoid the stated negative results, but its excessive use can ultimately undermine the leader’s ability to lead. Reward power is said to be the opposite of coercive power, and is, “Compliance achieved based on the ability to distribute rewards that others view as valuable.” (Judge and Robbins, 2012) These rewards are based on compliance, and the benefits can be either financial or nonfinancial such as promotions, raises, bonuses, preferred work schedules, or time off. Legitimate power is, “the formal authority to control and use organizational resources based on structural position in the organization.” (Judge and Robbins, 2012) This power is greater than the power to reward or coerce, because it relies on the peoples acknowledgement of the authority of a leaders position. It can be unstable on a personal level, if the leader is seen as not having the authority in a certain area, the power is lost. “Expert power is influence wielded as a result of expertise, special skill, or knowledge.” (Judge and Robbins, 2012) This category shifts the balance of power from authority to personal.
