Remembering an Event
A Night to Remember
“Emjed hurry up!” my cousin shouts with joy. I walked out of the garage while putting on my jacket to get into my car. We first drove to go and pick up my friend, Nathan. As we got close to his house, I called him to come out. A few minutes later, he came out and jumped in the car. Before we headed to the party, we made a quick stop at the liquor store to buy alcohol. Once we left the store, we spotted two cop cars right behind us. My friend Nathan was so scared because he was only nineteen years old at the time. Even though I was the same age, I wasn’t too afraid. Eventually, the cops turned into a street just a couple miles before we got to our destination. I was a bit hesitant about going, but it was too late to turn back now. I didn’t want to look like I was a little kid in front of my cousin and my friend. We finally arrived at my cousin’s house around eleven at night. Before I knew it, seconds turned to minutes which then turned to hours. It was already three in the morning. I was pretty much already screwed because I had to be home around 3 o’clock. On the flip side, my friend never told his parents he was going to a party, so he snuck out of his house. I was the only one who did not drink because I volunteered myself to be the designated driver, and I don’t really like drinking too much, either. I couldn’t find Nathan downstairs anywhere, so I figured he was upstairs somewhere. A couple minutes later I found Nathan passed in one of the rooms upstairs. My cousin and I were able to carry him to my car. It was so dark outside the only thing that I was able to see were my lights when I unlocked my car. My friend Nathan was so wasted he couldn’t even talk, and on top of that, he threw up in my car! I finally got Nathan home, realizing I had to help him get into his room before his parents found out. I wouldn’t be in this situation if I had chosen to just stay home for the night and not go out. I helped Nathan walk to the front door and

While lying on the grass in the front yard, I imagined the exciting night ahead. Before long, Taylor and his girlfriend, Kara, arrived and picked me up. Almost immediately, I stood up and sauntered in my Duke sweatshirt and basketball shorts over to their car. I jumped into the backseat. Immediately, I was assaulted with the strong smell of perfume that had been sprayed inside the car because it belonged to Kara. Tonight instead of driving, she decided to let Taylor drive illegally without a license. As we drove off to Erik’s house, the rendezvous for tonight’s “Goatman” adventure, we saw a police officer had just pulled a car over. As we drove by, we breathe easier and relaxed because we didn’t see any more cops on the way.…

I rushed out of my last class and made a beeline to my old hideout. As I started collecting my belongings I could hear the blaring of police sirens. I dropped everything and headed towards the main entrance. Glancing out the window I could see a very large crowd and at least a dozen police men. I sat with my hand on the door handle debating whether I should join the crowd or head home. After the longest 5 seconds of my life I swung the door open and rushed into the crowd of students. As I got closer and closer to the front of the crowd I could hear the screams of a boy. I still couldn’t see what was going on so I dropped to the ground to see between student’s legs. What I saw caused me to turn completely numb. There in the center of the courtyard stood IT. He has handcuffed and held back by three police men. I slowly crawled my way to the side to see the rest of the scene. As soon as I moved I regretted it. Lying on the ground, enclosed by a pool of blood and a long knife in there abdomen laid Rachel. I jumped to my feet and shoved my way to Andy Evans. The officers held me back as I kicked and screamed. I couldn’t control myself and the next thing I knew I was slowly falling to the…

The moment I picked up my phone I knew something was wrong. The tone of my friend Danny’s voice sounded very grave and worn. The reason why followed in lowly uttered words. “CJ is in the hospital.” In sort of a daze I rushed to the hospital and found a way into the Intensive Care Unit. There in the bed was my friend with two broken arms and internal damage to his kidneys. At his side sat his mom. When I asked what happened, she said that Cj was hit off of Brooks Bridge by a drunk driver. A thirty-foot fall into the ground below, landing in the grass. Cj was two-inches away from the stone hard concrete that could’ve ended his life.…

Death is the subject of both poems, Remember and The Cross of Snow, written by Christina Rossetti and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow respectively. The authors use many literary techniques, such as imagery, mood, and metaphors to explore the grieving process from two different perspectives, the dead in Remember and the living in The Cross of Snow. Although the poems have some similarities, they are also very different. While Longfellow's poem is about remembering and grieving, Rossetti's is about forgetting instead of mourning.…

When it comes to America’s history, I believe there is much to be said that often is left out. Much of this I can reference back to a class that I was fortunate enough to take at Rutgers as a junior, Politics and Culture. The class had a very interesting aspect, which concerned historical memory. Historical memory can be defined as state sponsored collective memory. In order to understand this concept it is important to first understand the concept of collective memory. Collective memory is the emotional quality that is given to past events. It is not so much history based on fact, but instead how a certain society remembers their history. Essentially historical memory is a collection of narratives about the past that state-sponsored elites turn into non-negotiable facts, such as the way Loewe critiques the textbooks provided to students. These students then in turn take what the professor teaches and the textbook preaches at face value as absolute fact, essentially eradicating the possibility for negotiation and debate.…

Who are we and do we even understand ourselves in our space before we try understanding anything else? In our rather busy lives today, we sometimes forget to take deep breaths and look at ourselves for who we really are. Our memories are there to guide us to establishing who we are. The line between selective memory and short term memory is dependent on our world. What we chose to remember someone else doesn’t and it all comes down to our uniqueness in our own worlds. Memories help shape our reality and their everlasting presence is a privilege that we have to understand ourselves as soul entities in our own worlds.…

A little over a year ago I was a senior in high school, leaving school with the weekend ahead of me, ready to unwind, and enjoy the night with my friends. On my trip home my mother called me and asked if I could go out of my way to pick my sister up from school; reluctantly, I tell her that I will. Before that call my friends and I had established that I would be driving us to the senior class tailgate before the football game that night. Wanting to get to the tailgate faster, I begin to force my foot on the gas pedal a little more, without thinking about the consequences of my risk. Suddenly, I look back in my rear view mirror and see the dreaded red, blue, and white lights flashing. I look down at my speedometer and realize…

“Every man’s memory is his private literature.” As illustrated in this quote from Huxley, individual memory can narrate a story that differs from documented events; it is through a combination of the two that we uncover a more reliable account. Peter Carey’s prose novel True History of the Kelly Gang and Christopher Nolan’s 2000 movie Memento represent history and memory in unique and evocative means by exploring the interplay between one’s individual perspective and the established ‘truth’.…

The owner of the house yelled at me and told me I better not move. Even though I had a concealed weapon in my back pack I didn’t reach for it. Frozen in fear I did just that and I didn’t move an inch until the police arrived. Just like I had seen on so many shows the police showed up and handcuffed me like a common criminal, read me my Mirada Rights, and literally threw me in the back seat of the police squad. So there I sat in the back of the squad car just a couple of days after my seventeenth birthday knowing what was going to happen next as I had been down this road before. My mind raced as we drove to the police station in what seemed to be the longest ride I had ever taken in my life even thought the police station was only 3 miles away from my home.…

A mole is just another common mark on the body, which everyone has, so what’s the big deal, right? Well, some are just common markings, while others can be life threatening. My family learned this all too well back in February of 2014. It’s never a perfect visit to the dermatologist when you get a mole removed from your head, only to find out after testing that it was positive for melanoma. I remember a minor surgery was performed on the neck and two lymph nodes were removed to be tested. Great news everybody, they were found to be cancer free! Now, stop and think how many lymph nodes are in your body.…
