Adventure with Goatman

While lying on the grass in the front yard, I imagined the exciting night ahead. Before long, Taylor and his girlfriend, Kara, arrived and picked me up. Almost immediately, I stood up and sauntered in my Duke sweatshirt and basketball shorts over to their car. I jumped into the backseat. Immediately, I was assaulted with the strong smell of perfume that had been sprayed inside the car because it belonged to Kara. Tonight instead of driving, she decided to let Taylor drive illegally without a license. As we drove off to Erik’s house, the rendezvous for tonight’s “Goatman” adventure, we saw a police officer had just pulled a car over. As we drove by, we breathe easier and relaxed because we didn’t see any more cops on the way.

After arriving at Erik’s house, Taylor kissed his girlfriend goodbye. When we go inside we are affectionately kissed and jumped on by Erik’s dogs. After watching TV and eating the pizza Eric cooked, we waited for the rest of the team for tonight’s adventure to arrive. Finally, Caleb and the rest of the crew showed and we prepared the battle van for the evening. We stopped for gas and six of us stuffed ourselves into the five person battle van. We were off to Lynden to investigate the claims regarding “The Goatman.”

Driving down the road, Caleb decided to test the brakes and acceleration of the van. While he slammed his foot between the brakes and the gas pedal, we were jolted throughout the van. Caleb laughed as we were thrown around unexpectedly. Soon we were just on our way to Lynden filled with anticipation. The energy in the van was high. The adventure and thrill had us excited and apprehensive. We talked and joked most of the way. Nearing Lynden, we began to calm down but we had a nervous anxiety that stirred in us. Arriving at the Goatman’s house, at 666 Badger Road, the uneasiness in the van could be felt. We were

The sun hung from the middle of the sky and seemed to almost liquefy the city below. The street reflected the heat like a tanning mirror placed beneath you. A car alarm echoed throughout the wide block before Bank of the West – an average looking bank painted tan with horizontal architecture that swept up the front of the structure. Two bullet holes plastered the echoing car like stickers placed meticulously on a movie set. Steam seeped from the engine block through the cracks of the hood and out into the blistering air, evaporating almost instantly in the blaze. A group of firemen detached the battery and doused the engine of the car with water, sending even more steam once again into the heated air. News reporters stood in front of bulky white vans, ducking the heat under sidewalk trees and overhangs from neighboring buildings. A bulky group of local citizens crowded behind police barriers surrounding the bank in an extensive ring. The barriers held back the murmuring crowd as chatter about what had happened drifted between their ears. An abundance of police officers stood around silently like mutes with sweat dripping from their brows, waiting for the detectives to finish and vacate the scene so they could do the…

The cab driver mumbled incomprehensible but foul language as I entered. I heaved my heavy brown overcoat off as I entered the cab so as to sit comfortably in this sticky, sweat smelling car. Will father show mercy, after all I promised that marrying her was my only favour. This ridiculous New York traffic, surrounded by those crooks prowling and scavenging on those that dare to walk alone. The dull grey sky didn’t interest me in the slightest and as I began getting restless, as my eyes feasted upon my ex-wife pictured with that Italian scum on the front page of the New York.…

"Taking a break from studying around midnight, Sarah decided to drive to get coffee in her brand new convertible Mercedes. On her way to the coffee shop, while looking down to read an incoming text, she ran a stop sign on a neighborhood street and was pulled over by the police. In a thick Southern accent, the officer asked her for her driver's license and insurance verification. As she was handing both to the officer, she realized she was wearing her spring break t-shirt with the words, "I Survived Spring Break 2012." Nervously, she blurted out, "Officer, I am a college student, and I have been studying, and I have not been drinking, and I am just going to get coffee." After receiving a ticket from the police officer she noticed her badge, which stated, "Protect and Serve." Her frustration quickly dissipated as she realized that the police officer was carrying out her duty to maintain public safety and her actions could have caused a serious accident. Contemplating the night's event, she drove 10 miles under the speed limit the rest of the way to the coffee shop."…

“The Throwaways” is an article about four young confidential informants who had their lives cut short because they decided to cooperate with law enforcement and help bust drug dealers. Every single informant’s fate led 6 feet underground. Rachel Hoffman was a twenty-three year old girl who had plans to go to culinary school and open a new type of rehabilitation center. Rachel was found dead the next day fifty miles from where the cops were supposed to be tracking her every move. Lebron Gaither testified against a man in court and was then ordered to try and buy narcotics from the same man he had just testified against; he was tortured, shot with a handgun as well as a shotgun, ran over by a car, and then dragged by a chain into the woods. Shelly Hilliard was caught with a half ounce of pot, threatened with prison, and agreed to be an informant. Hilliard’s body was found on fire beneath a…

My phone was glued to my hand by the sweat of my hand, I held it all though the night. I had waited for this day for over a year, and I couldn’t understand what was holding me back from jumping out of my bed and leaping into the car. Dragging my feet over to my dresser, I slipped on the mandatory blue jersey polo and cringed as I saw myself in the mirror; I looked like a mess. While eating a blueberry bagel, I grabbed my carry on and suit case and headed out to the car. I could barely keep my eyes open and my stomach was filing with butterflies the closer we got to the…

At one-thirty in the afternoon, Carolee Mitchell was running the vacuum cleaner, or she would have heard the first sirens and looked out. After the first, there weren’t any others. The calling voices, even the number of dogs barking, could have been students on their way back to school, high-spirited in the bright, cold earliness of the year. Thinking back on the sounds, Carolee remembered a number of car doors being slammed, that swallow of air and report which made her smooth her hair automatically even if she wasn’t expecting anyone. But what caught her eye finally was what…

Armin’s mother drove us to Chili’s, as she normally did because Chili’s was our hang out at the time, and dropped us off at the front door. We were there a little early because Armin did not want his mother to see his girlfriend. Armin did not tell his mother that he had a girlfriend because he did not know how she would respond to it. Armin, Jordan, and I walked in the front door. It was packed as it usually is on a Saturday night. All the tables were filled with people laughing and carrying on. The waitress then walked up to us with a fake cheesy smile…

    The Innocent Man

John Grisham’s legal novels are well-known to avid readers of that literary genre. THE INNOCENT MAN is Grisham’s first (and so far only) venture into non-fiction. It tells the story of Ron Williamson, an Oklahoma boy with great promise as a professional baseball player. However, the demons of drink, drugs, and mental illness prevented Williamson from fulfilling that potential. Eventually, Williamson’s demons also destroyed his marriage, prevented him from holding a decent job, and resulted in his development of a local reputation as an erratic, unpredictable man who could be likable at times but was generally not to be trusted. When a young female acquaintance, Debbie Carter, was found raped and murdered in her garage apartment in his hometown of Ada, Oklahoma, in 1982, it was not surprising that the police eventually considered him a person of interest.…

Once upon a time there was a lady. She was a coloured lady, in a red jacket. The jacket probably came from a thrift store, because it wasn’t a very fancy jacket. The lady though, is the focal point of my story, more so than the jacket. This is my thesis statement. See, the lady was afraid of cameras. The flashes caused her pupils to dilate, her head to twitch, and her mind to explode… Well, the last one’s false, but it sounded like a decent additive to the story. So anyways, one day, which I nicknamed Fateful Tuesday, she was taking a stroll through the park. But this time, it wasn’t just any leisurely stroll. Suddenly she was abducted by Keanu Reeves. Keanu Reeves abducted her, because he was feeling sad and lonely while sitting by himself on a bench in the park. He didn’t actually intend on abducting her though. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her over to the bench for some company. She didn’t like that though. In fact, she hated it. She hated it so much; she kicked and screamed, then proceeded to take out her rape whistle. She blew into it quite hard, actually. If you were there, you’d understand how hard I’m talking about. Anyhoo, this caught the attention of the police, which then came over to thwart Keanu’s plans, whatever they were. At that very moment, right before Discher apprehended him, Mr. Reeves took it upon himself to football tackle Ms. Redjacketfromathriftstore, and run off. He took her to his limo, still parked outside. Shouting “Go, go, go!”, the limo pulled off in haste, leaving Discher in the dust. Driving for a few hours, they arrived at Keanu’s place in New Jersey. Apparently, New Jersey has no left turns, but I think that’s false. Mr. Reeves asked his driver to play the theme song from the telly show ‘The Sopranos’ while driving over the Commodore Barry Bridge, and put his arm around Ms. Redjacketfromathriftstore. She didn’t quite like that, honestly, I was there. He offered her a drink, still humming the ‘Sopranos’…

“Derek!” I shout as loud as I virtually can over an angry text message, “I’ve had it! I’m so done with today. I need to clean something, so I’m coming over.” The only time I ever call D-Rok by his full name is when I’m so beyond mad that the “D” and the “Rok” of his nickname collide together to create the sound of his birth name. I’m sure he already knows what’s wrong, he always does, so I slip my giraffe Toms on my feet, grab my keys, slam my door, and stomp down the stairs of my apartment complex. My mood starts to lift at the beauty of the day, but on the way to my car I briefly trip over a crack in the sidewalk, which immediately reminds me of my rage for this cursed day. With my new-found memory, I slide in my car, forget the seatbelt, chuck my phone, and blast my radio as I speed, enraged, down the street to D-Rok’s house. Immediately once I walk in the door, my mood is completely flipped. I’m greeted by Jordan, his 5 year-old angel of a daughter, and his warm embrace. “It’s today, isn’t it?” he asks, “Today’s the day Stephan took his life some years ago.”…
