Personal Narrative: Dropping Saulo
I always believed that my success was dependent solely on hard work. I studied hard for tests, edited papers late into the night, and poured countless hours into practicing for the ACT. However, I came to realize that success also requires opportunity and good luck. After a soccer tournament in San Diego, my teammate, Saulo, asked my parents for a ride home. As we neared Saulo’s house in Compton, I heard police sirens blaring and saw metal bars covering the windows. A beat-up 70s Chevy rusted in the front yard. Dropping Saulo off made me realize the “American Dream” is more attainable in circumstances of privilege. Saulo is one of the hardest working kids that I know, but he lacks the support and financial stability

First, I agree with following notion by Oprah Winfrey which states “luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity,” because the actions you take will always determine your outcome. I believe this because when you want to get somewhere you are not just sitting there waiting on to come to you about it. I feel that by going out and being in control and being a go getter will always determine your outcome. For example, I wanted my family to have a better lifestyle than what I experienced, so I decided to obtain a college degree. While making this decision I couldn’t just lie around and expect to get accepted just from doing research. I had to apply myself during high school, being that I had to make good grades. In addition, I had to go out and fill out applications to various universities and constantly make phone calls to ensure I took the right actions to get to where I wanted to be.…

Walking into the locker room about to get ready to go to our last football game of the season. I could smell the sweaty equipment from the kids who never take their pads home. The Hempfield Spartans 7th grade team would be ending their season 0-7 if we didn’t win today. As I was changing into my pads my friend mike walked in the room. I said “you ready for tonight”. “Heck yeah” replied Mike.…

“The Throwaways” is an article about four young confidential informants who had their lives cut short because they decided to cooperate with law enforcement and help bust drug dealers. Every single informant’s fate led 6 feet underground. Rachel Hoffman was a twenty-three year old girl who had plans to go to culinary school and open a new type of rehabilitation center. Rachel was found dead the next day fifty miles from where the cops were supposed to be tracking her every move. Lebron Gaither testified against a man in court and was then ordered to try and buy narcotics from the same man he had just testified against; he was tortured, shot with a handgun as well as a shotgun, ran over by a car, and then dragged by a chain into the woods. Shelly Hilliard was caught with a half ounce of pot, threatened with prison, and agreed to be an informant. Hilliard’s body was found on fire beneath a…

Tyler Evan is one of my many peers who have made a huge impact on my life. I meet Tyler in April of 2017 and though I have not know him that the long the summer we spent together has changed a lot about how I see the world. He has opened my eyes up to a whole new social class that I was not familiar with. When I was growing up I had supportive parents and never had to worry about financial problems. As me and Tyler began to get closer I found out that my life isn't at all what most people have. Due to some circumstances his parents were very involved in his life, and had little to no money. After all he had been through and all the challenges he has faced , It still shocks he that he is as strong and independent as he his. For me I had always seen the people on the street who lacked money but they never really meant anything to. People who have little to no money can be just a great, and hardworking as those who are wealth.…

First, hard work, in some aspect can never be able to guarantee success; yet, it ensures that success is possible. One person can say that: “success is not possible without luck”. I never deny this idea. However, I also believe that when you try your best to achieve a goal, you will create your own opportunity, and opportunity will bring luck to you. Thus, there can be no doubt that hard work plays a significant role of success.…
